For a few weeks in September 2010 the Southwestern College Sun student newspaper was the most famous publication in the U.S., if not the world. A corrupt college president ordered the paper shut down but did not count on a team of scrappy students and their stubborn professor punching back. The 48th annual Bonitafest Melodrama “Here Comes The Sun” is based on the true story of a former SWC president who attempted to coerce faculty and students to cease publication of the 24-time collegiate Pulitzer Prize newspaper to cover up what became San Diego County’s biggest ever case of public corruption. News of the threat garnered national news media support for The Sun and a financial contribution from science-fiction writing legend J. Michael Straczynski that paid for the issue. “This is a project that hits close to home and is very personal,” said Melodrama Artistic Director Dr. Max Branscomb, the 31-year advisor of Southwestern’s Hall of Fame newspaper and magazine. “It was a rough period but we persevered. It is, in hindsight, a very compelling story. The part where JMS came to our rescue is remarkable and all true.” “Here Comes The Sun” is a musical that focuses on the students who entered college as teenaged journalism students and exited as battle hardened First Amendment warriors who earned the respect of the nation’s professional news media and the gratitude of the community for keeping $1 billion of local construction bond money out of the hands of criminals. After The Sun broke a series of stories about bribery, extortion and theft of public funds, San Diego County District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis ordered raids on the homes and offices of nearly two dozen SWC and Sweetwater High School District leaders who were later charged with 262 felonies. “Here Comes The Sun” runs September 24-27 at the Sweetwater Church Theater, 5305 Sweetwater Road in Bonita. Celebrated GRAMMY Award-winning British ensemble, The King’s Singers, return to the United States in October 2025 five-city tour. These fall performances follow the group’s successful February 2025 concert run that marked the group’s first with new member Piers Connor Kennedy. On the brink of their 60th Anniversary Season in 2028, the upcoming tour will bring the King’s Singers to cities across the U.S., including: Durham, NC, Phoenix, AZ, San Diego, CA, Wheaton, IL, and Storm Lake, IA. Upcycle Your Own Item! Learn to Carve & Block Print! Choose from: Thursday, October 2, 6-8 p.m. or Thursday, November 6, 6-8 p.m. Have you ever wanted to print your own designs on shirts and bags?! In this 2-hour workshop, you’ll learn the art of relief printing! Students will learn to design and carve their own linoleum stamp and block print an image onto fabric. We invite you to upcycle fabric from your own wardrobe or home for this class, so grab a well-loved favorite item or something that could use a fun refresh and begin imagining some fun designs you might carve and print! Because this class focuses on upcycling, please bring your own fabric to block print on. This can be clothing, a tote bag or something else. You may bring more than one item and the instructor can help you choose which to print on in class. We recommend you avoid fabrics that are especially thin, like satins and silks. All other tools and materials needed for this class will be supplied for use. Learn to Weave! Sunday, September 28, from 2-6 p.m. Join us for an afternoon of fiber friendship and camaraderie. Weaving is an ancient craft; it shelters and clothes as well as adorns our spaces, adding texture, color, design and inspiration to our lives. And it is the actual process of weaving, along with selecting fibers, natural objects; guiding weft through the vertical foundation of warp strings; creating pattern/texture as the process unfolds…these steps continue to connect us with the past, and more importantly, with ourselves. Join in this weaving workshop as we weave intuitively and work together in a space of creativity and openness. Instructor Jeanine Ertl will provide guidance in a variety of weaving techniques and will surround you with warped looms to work on, tools to learn with, natural fibers, and foraged and gathered natural objects to incorporate into your weavings. Feel free to bring your own items to weave into your piece, especially if there are any fibers/yarns, stones/crystals, shells, leaves/grasses, etc. that you’d like to experiment with. Each weaver will complete a one-of-a-kind woven textile. We’ll have rods on hand for those who would like to adapt their pieces into wall hangings. No experience necessary. Ages 14+ welcome! Make Tiny Ceramics! Saturday, September 20, 10 a.m. - Noon Join us in the land of miniatures. You will learn how and get to create tiny pottery on a mini pottery wheel. No previous pottery experience necessary! In this 2-hour class, you will learn to create 1-3 tiny pots and can add some color if you would like to. You will learn how to center the clay and open it up to form tiny pots, bowls, or plates. This class is a great way to learn the basics of a wheel on a small scale. It is less intimidating and is an accessible way to throw and center clay. Grab a friend or family member who’s been curious about ceramics and come join me in creating tiny pottery! Projects will be ready to pick up 3-4 weeks after class. No experience necessary. Ages 12+ welcome! Sunday, November 2, 1 p.m. - 5 p.m. No experience necessary. Age 15+ welcome! An ancient and eco-centered craft, Natural Dyes are a place to connect with the beauty and bounty of our planet’s rich offerings while creating with color and using our hands and minds to refresh our homes, wardrobes and to create one-of-a-kind palettes. In this hands-on workshop students will learn the entire process of natural dyeing while incorporating creative design elements through resist dye methods of Shibori. Each student will Shibori and hand-dye three natural fiber silk &/or bamboo scarves or squares to take home or gift to loved ones. If you’ve ever looked into using Natural Dyes, you may have been intimidated by the many facets of the process. We’ll cover them all–scour, mordant, preparation of natural dye, basic Shibori dye resist methods, natural dyeing & finishing–in great detail so you can get to creating with natural color today. All materials included. Students will receive an "Intro to Natural Dyes" booklet that covers the entire process in detail, three natural fiber scarves to dye and Shibori, and samples from the dye pots.
