The House of Pacific Relations will present its 40th Annual Ethnic Food Fair, taking place at The International Cottages in Balboa Park, 2191 Pan American W Rd, San Diego, CA 92101, Sunday, May 7, 2023, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. "The Ethnic Food Fair is an awesome annual event for families and more, which is why the 40th Anniversary is so exciting,” said Mike Salazar, Member of the USA, House of Pacific Relations. “Each year, it’s great to see the unique entertainers and cuisines from so many countries to try and enjoy, all in one place.” The Ethnic Food Fair will feature multicultural live performances, and will offer locals and visitors an opportunity to explore and taste a variety of food from 31 historic international cottages. The actual number of EFF participants varies from year to year. Guests are able to purchase delectable ethnic dishes and treats, which support each of the non-profit cottages, and they will have an opportunity to interact with volunteers who proudly showcase culture, education, travel ideas, crafts and volunteerism. So Cal Comics is excited to announce its participation in the nationally popular one-day event designed to stimulate business for comic book retailers and publishers, Free Comic Book Day. This event will occur on Saturday, May 20, 2023, at the massive outdoor arena of Southern California Comics. "We're going all out this year," says owner Jamie Newbold. "We'll be handing out thousands of free comic books to everyone and anyone who comes to our event. It's a great opportunity to rediscover the love for your favorite childhood hobby." 2023 marks the 21st year of the event and the 25th anniversary of the opening of Southern California Comics. We will celebrate the anniversary with limited edition store shirts and tote bags, available starting on Free Comic Book Day. Previous shows have attracted as many as 1500 people. This year we have 24 vendors of hot collectibles and local comic creators sharing their original creations. So Cal Comics has an impressive guest list of local art talent, but the Tour de Force is the seminal arrangement to have over one million dollars worth of comic books on display in one glass case. Actual copies of Action Comics 1-10 will be on display, which is a great photo opp moment because of San Diego's comic heritage. "This is a great photo opp for the press," says Newbold. "These books are rarely seen in public for their scarcity." The event is family-friendly and will be held outdoors. Cosplay is encouraged! Taking inspiration from temples of various belief systems, A Coruscating Sanctuary provides a platform for the activities that take place within. Kineto-luminescent furnishings and lights orient participants to the central “altar” and matching lectern. Here, the sanctuary invites visitors to participate in quiet reflection, readings, and occasional activations in the exchange of philosophies through poetry, sound, movement, and performance. Wendell M. Kling is a Southern California based interdisciplinary artist and educator. Kling's work is grounded in contemporary interdisciplinary practice that often incorporates sculptural objects with two-dimensional media, installation, performance, and film. The artist received a BA and MFA in studio art from UCSD in 1989 and 2000 respectively and has exhibited locally and nationally at the Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego, Ship in the Woods, Bread & Salt, Art Basel Miami (2005), Thrust Projects in New York, and MAK Center for Art and Architecture in Los Angeles. Kling is currently professor of sculpture and new genres at San Diego Mesa College.
