Prog-Rock Powerhouse Stick Men Return to San Diego with Chapman Stick Virtuoso Tom Griesgraber Nearly two years since their last San Diego performance, Stick Men — the progressive rock supergroup featuring Tony Levin, Pat Mastelotto, and Markus Reuter — return to the Bornemann Theater in San Marcos. This marks a special homecoming of sorts, as Mastelotto and Reuter were the first national touring act to perform at the Bornemann’s Grand Opening in May 2024, along with Trey Gunn as part of their band TU-NER. Formed in 2007, Stick Men is known for their adventurous sound built around electric touch-style instruments like the Chapman Stick and the self-designed U8 guitar. Levin (Peter Gabriel, King Crimson) anchors the trio with his mastery of the Chapman Stick, an instrument that simultaneously covers both bass and melody. Mastelotto brings an innovative approach to percussion, blending acoustic drums with an electronic setup, while Reuter adds layers of depth and texture with his custom instrument. The Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch will open its gates to springtime enthusiasts beginning Saturday, March 1, 2025 for friends and families to wander amongst the colorful fifty-five acres of Giant Tecolote Ranunculus: a flower renowned for its large, double-petaled blooms that sit atop tall, straight stems. For the 2025 season, The Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch is thrilled to welcome its very first traveling exhibit and will serve as the colorful backdrop for artist Alex Heveri’s, “Glass in Flight” which features over three dozen glass and steel sculptures of sparkling butterflies, dragonflies, bamboo, bees and insects that compliment the gardens and fields. The dazzling attraction stretches eight to ten weeks each year, from early March through early May, with a full slate of activities including live music performances, workshops and wellness classes. “This is going to be the most colorful season at The Flower Fields to date,” says Fred Clarke, General Manager of The Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch. “We can’t wait to see the faces of our guests as they take in the sight of Alex Heveri’s life-like, giant sculptures set against the natural beauty of The Flower Fields.” “Glass in Flight” features giant insects handcrafted from glittering Dalle de Verre glass, set into bright, powder-coated steel frames that will be scattered around The Flower Fields like giant jewels, complimenting the 55 acres of ranunculus and colorful gardens. Join Janice Smith, VMF’s Education Coordinator and Certified Forest Therapy Guide, on a guided Forest Bathing walk at VMF's Volcan Mountain Nature Center in Julian, CA. Forest Bathing, also called Shinrin-Yoku, is a practice that supports healing and wellness through guided sensory immersion in forests and other natural environments. It is not a hike with a destination or goal, rather a series of guided open invitations aimed at slowing down and taking time to wander and notice nature. Shinrin-Yoku originated in Japan in the 1980’s to address a spike in stress related illness during the new tech boom. Shinrin in Japanese means “forest” and yoku means “bath.” So Shinrin-Yoku means bathing in the forest atmosphere or taking in the forest through your senses with the intention of receiving therapeutic benefits. The walk ends with a tea ceremony, using foraged local plants made by the guide. Note: This experience is for adults only and is limited to 10 participants. Way Outside the Lines presents Destination Joy! An immersive art collaboration between San Diego neighborhoods utilizing art and the MTS Trolley System to foster solidarity and raise awareness. The Urban Collaborative Project and lead artist, Khalil Bleux, are partnering with some exceptional artists and cultural practitioners from San Ysidro, Chula Vista, National City, and Southeast San Diego for a 2-day event on August 3rd and 4th from 8 a.m. - 6 p.m. on the MTS Trolley cars and select Trolley stations: San Ysidro- Iris Avenue Transit Station, Chula Vista- E Street Transit Center, National City- 24th Street Transit Center, Downtown- Park and Market, Southeast San Diego- Euclid Avenue Transit Station and Jacobs Center. The organizers of this immersive event recognize the transformative power of art, cultural practice, and solidarity in working toward equity and justice. The 2-day art program aims to inspire community engagement and raise awareness regarding the impact of systemic racism and oppressive practices such as redlining.
