This eight-week workshop style course introduces students to a popular and fun printmaking technique of silk screen. No prior experience in printmaking is necessary. Students will create vibrant, multicolor prints using water-based silk-screen materials while exploring their own style and applying this popular method to their own imagery. The direct, on-screen stencil techniques, such as screen filler/drawing fluid or wax crayon, as well as indirect, photo-emulsion methods of drawing on Mylar will be shown, and digital file preparation will be explored. A stencil monotype-printing and mixed-media approaches will be covered. Students will learn how to set up their own DIY studio and will learn all aspects of preparation, setup, and production of fine art prints. Materials: Ink and studio materials will be provided. Fun and fast-paced, life drawing is a wonderful way to be in the moment. Learn how to draw the human figure, hone your existing skills, and develop some new ones. Create imagery or sculptures using the process of paper making! Paper is a material that is a staple in nearly every art form across the world, be it for drawing, painting or even sculpture. Inspired by different methods of paper making from easter Asia, and paper based arts such as Mexican cartonería, Students will learn how to create paper pulp using recycled paper, ways to dye the paper pulp and how to create imbedded imagery in sheets of paper or how to use the pulp as a “paper clay” to create sculptures. Rugs have a deep history as a textile art, but also as objects that create specific spaces. Using handheld tufting machines, participants can create and design their own rugs using colorful yarn. Learn how to create and translate a design for the medium as well as learn the basics of tufting and begin filling in your designs. Learn the basics of quadruped animal anatomy and how it can be translated into three-dimensional sculpture. We will talk about how the animal skeleton works, the basic muscle groups of locomotion, and the animal skull and features. Students will make their own sculpture by working from a cast sculpture of a dog. There will also be sessions with a live dog present. Set sail for an evening of raucous adventure and rollicking laughter as Grossmont College Theatre Arts presents "The Pirates of Penzance!" This timeless comic opera by W.S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan will sweep audiences off their feet with its infectious melodies, zany characters, and madcap wit. Directed and choreographed by Melissa Glasgow, with musical direction by Patrick Marion, "The Pirates of Penzance" will run March 20-27 at Grossmont College’s Performing & Visual Arts Center Stage. The production brings a fresh, dynamic energy to this beloved classic while honoring the rich tradition of Gilbert and Sullivan’s razor-sharp satire and high-spirited hijinks. "The Pirates of Penzance" follows the story of Frederic, a young man mistakenly apprenticed to a band of soft-hearted pirates. As he completes his term of service, he vows to dedicate himself to eradicating piracy—until a technicality binds him to the pirates indefinitely. Along the way, he encounters the beautiful Mabel, her eccentric father, Major-General Stanley, and a bumbling squad of police officers who are more charming than effective. This is a unique opportunity to study with two accomplished and warmhearted artist-educators in the same course. Ken and Stephanie are both well known for their ability to help each person find their own unique drawing abilities. Each week there will be a life model. On day one, Ken will introduce a simplified approach to gesture drawing and the fundamentals of figure and head construction. During Weeks 2 and 3, Ken will go deeper into the importance of gesture drawing in relation to constructing and composing longer poses. During the final three weeks, Stephanie will continue to build on Ken’s lessons but will include longer poses that will allow students time to incorporate the basics into an actual process of drawing or painting more finished figures and portraits. Materials: You do not need to buy everything on this list. Only buy materials that relate to the medium you plan to work with, or if you are more advanced, bring your own supplies. On day one you will only need newsprint, a drawing board, vine charcoal, kneaded eraser, and one colored pastel for accents. Let's move away from the mass-produced and make our own set of handmade, functional pieces. In this beginner-friendly course, students will learn hand-building techniques to create functional pottery, including but not limited to cups, bowls, and plates. Starting with these simple forms, students will learn the basics, develop their technique and get creative! The possibilities are endless and students will be able to create their own set, unique to their preferences and home use. The last class will be reserved for glazing. While this is a beginner-friendly course, intermediate students may join. Materials: Students must purchase a rolling pin; we'll use these to roll out slabs. Please bring an apron, hand towel, and notebook to keep track of wonderful ideas. Students may also bring their own tools or purchase a standard tool kit if they wish, but not required. The $30 materials fee includes clay, glazes, firings, and the use of basic studio tools.
