Hawthorne Country Store hosts its annual spring Chick Day on Saturday, March 8 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Escondido, Fallbrook, and Santee. This complimentary annual celebration will host more than 100 varieties of baby poultry; the event is a great way to learn about raising a home flock of backyard chickens. Hundreds of families typically attend each year. “More and more families are finding that chickens are pets that come with great benefits, such as producing protein, creating fertilizer, and recycling waste,” says Heather Thelen, owner of Hawthorne Country Store. “We are excited to once again bring this popular event to our communities [Escondido, Fallbrook and Santee] and share all our chicken knowledge.” There will also be a Peep Show on Friday, March 7, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at all three locations. The $55 charge covers two adults, 21 and over. There will be hors d’oeuvres and beverages. This will give customers the first pick of rare, exotic, and the best egg-laying breeds. North Coast Rep presents "Some Dark Valley: The Testimony of Reverend Brand" written and performed by Robert Bailey. One moonlit night, Reverend Brand, a fiery 19th century circuit preacher, emerges from the shadowy mountains of Appalachia, and our collective history, to weave a tale of religious fervor set against a landscape scarred by war, poverty and disease – a story that also shines a light on rare moments of tender and resilient redemption. Robert Bailey’s solo performance grapples with the inevitable clash between an unyielding vision of moral rectitude and the tragic personal destruction it leaves in its wake. Embodying multiple characters while also singing gorgeous traditional songs handed down through generations of Southerners, Bailey transports the audience to a land and era that is haunting and illuminating in its relevance to today. Bach Collegium San Diego Presents Knock out Sounds with Reginald Mobley The Return of Bach to Bop Bach Collegium San Diego (BCSD), one of the country’s leading baroque ensembles, is performing with countertenor d'Amore Reginald Mobley who showcases the thin lines between the worlds of baroque and jazz. The repertoire, from J.S. Bach and Purcell to Sarah Vaughan and Ella Fitzgerald, explores the world of improvisation, ornamentation, pulsating bass lines, and most importantly, groove. “When exploring the world of Baroque music and where it intersects with jazz, who better to lead the way than one of the great countertenors of this generation, Reginald Mobley,” said BCSD Musical Director Ruben Valenzuela. “We're incredibly fortunate to have him back with BCSD after the success of Bach to Bop from a few years ago. Get ready...from Purcell and Bach to Sarah Vaughan and Duke Ellington!" BCSD partnered with local schools to develop an education curriculum surrounding this program and the similarities and differences (and historical timeline of the genres) of baroque and jazz music. The pilot program is in development but BCSD is planning on having the students perform a piece or two on the concert program as a culmination of this special program. Bach Collegium San Diego Presents "Total Sound Explosion 2!" March 15-16 Bach Collegium San Diego (BCSD), one of the country’s leading baroque ensembles, presents "Sound Explosion 2", featuring groundbreaking works from different centuries. Beginning with Rebel's shocking depiction of chaos, through Beethoven's exhilarating ride from darkness to triumphant light. "I'm looking forward to leading an unlikely pairing of two revolutionary works with the intrepid, firecracker BCSD orchestra on historical instruments,” said BCSD Musical Director Ruben Valenzuela. “In particular, the opportunity to bring Beethoven's sound world to the iconic Symphony No. 5, like you've never heard it before!" Many people know the Beethoven piece (at least the opening da da da dun....) but this will be the first time the audience will hear the piece played on period instruments, a very different experience from a regular symphony orchestra sound.
