The National Working Waterfront Network’s Conference is the only national event that brings together people from across North America to connect with one another and showcase initiatives that protect and promote working waterfronts. Working waterfronts include waterfront lands, waterfront infrastructure, and waterways that are used for water-dependent activities, such as ports, marinas, small recreational boat harbors, and fishing docks. By design, the conference moves around the country to highlight the diversity of our nation’s working waterfronts; to foster a cross-fertilization of ideas, knowledge, and solutions; and to generate strategic partnerships. The National Working Waterfront Network is pleased to be partnering with California Sea Grant to host the 2025 conference. The conference will take place from February 4 to February 6, 2025 in San Diego, California, with pre-conference events occurring on February 3. Website registration is closed. Purpose of the Conference *To connect and unite stakeholders from across the U.S., and to showcase innovative, successful, and timely solutions to waterfront and waterway issues. *To provide attendees an opportunity to network with others who are involved in the same types of professional issues and, together, develop strategies, timelines, funding sources, and regional alliances to address them. Program Structure *Plenary Sessions, which will feature leaders and keynote presenters from the working waterfronts and waterways community. *Traditional Concurrent Sessions, which will include 15-20 minute speaker talks accompanied by PowerPoint presentations. Concurrent sessions will be arranged from individual abstracts submitted on similar topics. *Breakout “Panel” Sessions, which will include 90-minute breakout sessions with a panel of speakers on topics related to a specific theme. *Roundtable Discussions, which will include 90-minute breakout sessions of a facilitated and interactive discussion with engaged attendees on specific topics. *Formal Poster Session, which will feature all NWWN Conference poster presentations. *Creative Communication Installations, includes an individual or team presentation, discussion or performance of art, media, film, poetry, etc.

As a recording and touring artist, James Taylor has touched people with his warm baritone voice and distinctive style of guitar-playing for more than 50 years, while setting a precedent to which countless young musicians have aspired. Over the course of his celebrated songwriting and performing career, he has sold more than 100 million albums, earning gold, platinum and multi-platinum awards since the release of his self-titled debut album in 1968. In 2015, he released "Before This World," the first-ever #1 album of his illustrious career. James has won multiple Grammy® Awards, has been inducted into both the Rock and Roll and the prestigious Songwriters Halls of Fame and in February 2006, The National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences selected him its MUSICARES Person of the Year. He was also awarded the distinguished Chevalier of the Order of Arts and Letters by the French government and the National Medal of Arts by President Barack Obama in 2012. Tuesday–Thursday, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. March 25 – 27 (3 Days, 18 total hours of instruction) La Jolla Studio Geoff begins all classes with lessons in watercolor handling, notably the relationship between brush mixture and paper moisture and the concept of connection. During the daily demonstrations, the class will cover color mixing, brush handling, and contour drawing skills. Painting from life gives you the opportunity to observe directly from nature different forms of light and surfaces. There will be a focus on impressionistic interpretations of fruit and flowers through the use of watercolor techniques to express form: wet on wet, wet on dry, dry brushing, splattering, lifting, and most importantly adding water. Thursday, 9 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. March 20 (1 Day, 4.5 total hours of instruction) La Jolla Studio Paint from a beautiful still life inspired by spring flowers! This is a one-day intensive workshop focusing on painting flowers alla prima. Students will learn about composition by designing and setting up a floral still life. We will take a closer look at the structure of flowers and techniques for painting them. A fun, fast study, and an excellent opportunity to develop painting skills and study floral painting in depth. The workshop will conclude with group critique. For oil painters of all levels. Materials: 9” x 12” or 11” x 14” canvas or linen panel; half-dozen brushes, white bristle flat or filbert, size 2, 4, and 6. One medium-size steel palette knife; small, pointed round brush for detail, size 2–4. Wednesday, 9:30 a.m. –1:30 p.m. (Includes 1/2 hour lunch break) March 19 (1 day; 3.5 total hours of instruction) La Jolla Studio In this workshop you will have a wonderful and rare opportunity to draw two models together! We will have a 20-minute warmup, and then the models will take one long pose. Proportion and sighting will be emphasized, and students will have individual attention from the instructor. You may bring any material (drawing or painting) that you would like to use—excluding oil paints. Butcher paper and charcoal will be provided. The instructor will also bring a variety of drawing materials to try and to play with. We will take a break in the middle, so bring your lunch. A variety of teas, snacks, and water will be provided by the instructor. All skill levels are welcome! Materials: Two or more large sheets of charcoal or pastel paper and one kneaded eraser. Join a panel of scientific and artistic thinkers for a deep look at the roles of fungi on the planet and microscopic elements within complex systems. The visiting Treseder Lab of UC Irvine examines fungi’s layered relationship to planetary life and discusses how fungi mediate and connect distant ecosystems. David Familian introduces life webs and AI as complex systems, a topic that comes to focus in the art exhibition, "Future Tense: Art, Complexity, and Uncertainty." Artists in residence with the Beall Center’s Black Box Projects working with the Treseder Lab, art collective Cesar & Lois introduce their ecosystem-based artwork that articulates fungal respiration and bioelectric signaling. Moving across perspectives in art and science, the panelists reframe how we picture the planet. Scientists from The Treseder Lab include Dr. Kathleen Treseder and researchers Eduardo Misael Choreno Parra and Melanie Taleen Hacopian. David Familian is artistic director of Beall Center for Art + Technology at UC Irvine.
