Duo Festudgioso presents a diverse program for flute and guitar, exploring music from the Baroque to the contemporary era. The concert opens with Vivaldi’s elegant Sonata in F major, followed by the lyrical richness of Villa-Lobos in Bachianas brasileiras No. 5 and Distribuição de flores. Frederic Hand’s The Maverick brings modern rhythms and expressive interplay, and the program concludes with Piazzolla’s Histoire du Tango, a vivid journey through the evolution of tango from its early roots to the concert stage of today. Duo Festudgioso is a San Diego–based flute and guitar duo formed by flutist Dr. Yana Yan and guitarist Dr. Ming-Jui Liu. The ensemble brings together the warm, intimate sonorities of flute and guitar, presenting music that is expressive, colorful, and approachable. Their repertoire spans Classical and Romantic works, folk-inspired melodies, and the rhythmic vitality of tango. Duo Festudgioso has performed at venues throughout Southern California, including Roxbury Community Center (Beverly Hills), Encinitas Library, Encinitas Community and Senior Center, and La Jolla/Riford Library. Dr. Yana Yan, Flutist, is an active performer and dedicated educator based in San Diego. A winner of the 2024 La Jolla Symphony Emerging Artist Competition, she has appeared in concerts across the United States. In recent seasons, she has performed extensively in chamber recitals with her ensembles Duo Festudgioso and Connessa Collective throughout Southern California. Yan has held faculty positions at Augustana College and Black Hawk College. She earned her Bachelor of Music in Flute and Piano from the Wuhan Conservatory of Music, her Master of Music from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, and her Doctor of Musical Arts from the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami. His music and performances have been presented in Taiwan, the United States, and internationally across South America, Europe, and Asia. As a soloist and chamber musician, he has appeared at festivals and institutions including the I Seminário Internacional de Violão do IFCE, Long Island Guitar Festival, Qinling International Guitar Festival, and Résonance Guitar Music Festival, and has given a masterclass at Hunter College (New York). WHAT TO EXPECT Campers will learn foundational art skills like drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpting, and mixed media while also building confidence, problem-solving skills, and creative independence. Activities include drawing cartoons with a professional cartoon artist, designing and building cardboard “automatic machines” inspired by the "Aaron Kramer: Sense of Wonder" exhibition, creating custom prints on tote bags inspired by the "Matrix Multiplied: Hybrid Approaches to Printmaking exhibition," plein air watercolor painting, collaborative mural-making, beach sketching, mixed media collage, and more. Beyond art techniques, campers practice observation, creative thinking, collaboration, and expressing their ideas visually. The thousands of unseen farmworkers who make our daily meals possible are the subject of an exhibit of work by artist Jimmy Dorantes, to be presented by The Photographer’s Eye in Escondido. "The Hands That Feed Us" will open on May 9 at the nonprofit gallery, with an artist’s visit and reception on opening day from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., and will close on June 6. Dorantes has been photographing along the U.S.-Mexico border from a very young age, as his mother gave him his first camera at the age of three. His childhood home was on First Street in Calexico, directly across from the border fence, giving him a front-row seat on an ongoing social issue. Dorantes remembers border-crossers sleeping on the roof of his family home and hiding in a backyard tree to evade the Border Patrol. Dorantes is a visual storyteller who spent 25 years as a contract photojournalist for TIME magazine when it served as a major source for international news. "The Hands That Feed Us" is a personal homage to his roots, as Dorantes counted friends, neighbors and relatives among laborers working the fields. His mother’s family harvested crops in the Imperial Valley and traveled north during the Dust Bowl to find work. “It’s a very personal subject,” Dorantes said. “What I’ll be showing are pictures of migrant life, migrant workers sweating out in the fields like my mom would talk about. When I photograph the migrant workers, I’m kind of reliving the stories my mother shared with me.” One of Dorantes’ earliest portraits is of a 93-year-old farm worker he shot in 1974, when Dorantes was a 14-year-old high school student. “My friend, my high school buddy, said, ‘You have to take a picture of my grandfather. You’re not going to believe what he looks like,’” Dorantes recalled. The black and white image, "Mr. Nogales," shows nearly a century of field work in the man’s weathered face. Dorantes’ work has been shown at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), the California Museum of Photography in Riverside, and the Museum of Photographic Arts (MoPA) in San Diego.
