We're thrilled to welcome the Buddhist Temple of San Diego (BTSD) for this special performance! BTSD Taiko is an intergenerational taiko group. Several of its families have two generations of drummers. The temple practices Jodo Shinshu Buddhism and has been a place of cultural preservation for Japanese and Japanese Americans in San Diego since 1926. BTSD Taiko was originally founded in 1986, and after a hiatus, the group reconvened in 2007. BSTD Taiko has performed at numerous community events including local festivals, cultural celebrations and school and library programs. Following the performance, members of BTSD will lead a Q&A. This special event takes place outside on our Sanctuary Plaza. In the event of rain, we will move the performance inside to our Linder Hall. What is Taiko? Taiko is a traditional Japanese practice involving drumming, chanting, and choreography. The goal of BTSD Taiko’s drumming is not perfection in performance, but to put into practice mindfulness, oneness and gratitude. While drumming together, members aim to spread the dharma (teachings of Buddhism) such as interdependence and impermanence with the sangha (community). SAMAHAN Arts proudly shares the beauty of our heritage at the 46th Concert of Filipino Folk Dances and Music - “Sining Samahan - The Art of Coming Together”! Taking place at the Joan B. Kroc Theatre on November 14, 2026, this spectacular two-hour concert features both a matinee (2 p.m.) and evening (6 p.m.) performance. This two-hour program features SAMAHAN’s rich repertoire of popular folk dances and tribal rituals, performed by our skilled, youthful and energetic dancers. You will experience colorful, authentic Filipino traditional and ethnic attire, set to choreography designed specifically for the stage. From ancient rituals and courtship to festive celebrations, the dances and songs truly capture the heart, richness, and diversity of the Philippines. The production reflects a deep, complex history woven from Indian, Chinese, Indochinese, Indonesian, and Malay roots, alongside prominent Spanish and American influences. With the lively percussion of the Pakaraguian Kulintang Ensemble, three suites will showcase indigenous traditions, featuring the cultural dances and rituals of the Maranao from Mindanao, the Sama and Tausug of the Sulu Archipelago, and the Kalingas from the Cordilleras in Northern Luzon. The choreography is inspired by authentic performances, learned by the SAMAHAN Field Research team during visits to these communities last year. Audiences will also enjoy European- and Western-influenced pieces, including the graceful Maria Clara dances and energetic rural countryside numbers brought to life by the SAMAHAN Rondalla String Ensemble. On September 26, the Harvest Moon will rise over San Diego County, providing a fitting backdrop for the Ilan-Lael Foundation's annual Harvest Moon Fundraiser from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. Guests will enjoy rare access to the Ilan-Lael property, the home and creative sanctuary of renowned artist and architect James Hubbell, whose organically designed buildings and landscapes have become a treasured cultural landmark. The event offers visitors the opportunity to explore the grounds at their own pace while enjoying a thoughtfully curated meal prepared by local chefs using seasonal ingredients from the region. This year's featured guest is Ada Limón, who served as the nation's 24th U.S. Poet Laureate. Celebrated for poetry that explores the natural world and humanity's relationship with it, Limón is an especially fitting guest for an evening devoted to art and nature. She will deliver a special reading and reflect on her family’s roots in Julian and Santa Ysabel, where her father has spent years growing apples and pears. Join us for the Athenaeum Art Center’s 10th Anniversary Party & Secret Sale, an evening celebrating 10 years of art, music, printmaking, and community in Logan Heights. Inspired by the traditional Wayzgoose gathering of printers and printmakers, the party will feature food and drinks provided by Alchemy—Choose Thy Poison, music, and a Secret Sale of more than 20 donated works of art.
