The thrill of going behind-the-scenes to view the artistic process is an opportunity very few people ever get. In the case of Dr. Seuss, we can no longer visit his studio or see his creative process in action. But, with the never seen in San Diego “the spark of an icon” FREE exhibit at Exclusive Collections Gallery (EC Gallery) now we can. May 17th through June 7th, these concept drawings transport us to the moment of creation and allow us to peer over his shoulder as they come to life. We can feel the spark of creation as we follow the curved and dippy lines and watch as they form the icons that have now become so familiar in our everyday lives. To kick off this special exhibit, the gallery will hold a VIP reception on Friday, May 17 from 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. Ted Geisel (aka Dr. Seuss) drew each page for every Dr. Seuss book published during his lifetime. What many people don’t realize is that for each final-line drawing, he would create multiple concept drawings leading up to the final published image. The works in this exhibition are a shining example that perfection is illusive, that perseverance in achieving one’s goals is a worthy pursuit, and that passion for one’s craft is more important than achieving the perfect outcome. From the organizers: The sixth Latinx New Play Festival will take place at La Jolla Playhouse, October 27 – 29, 2023. The Latinx New Play Festival expands the presence of Latinx stories and artists on the American stage, and spotlights the broad range of today’s Latinx experience. Four scripts have been selected to be rehearsed and developed at the Playhouse, culminating in a live public reading at the festival. The festival will be free for everyone to attend, and includes a schedule of in-person readings of new works, panel discussions and other events. Produced by Dr. Maria Patrice Amon, the Playhouse’s 2023/2024 Artist-in-Residence, in partnership with La Jolla Playhouse, the Latinx New Play Festival was originally launched in 2016 by San Diego Repertory Theatre. About JP Balmat Jean-Paul (JP) Balmat is the award-winning educator and performer leading the internationally recognized music program at Mission Bay. His award-winning groups have been invited to perform throughout California, New Orleans and most recently Japan. Jean-Paul is an accomplished educator, performer, composer and arranger. As a professional saxophonist, he performs regularly in San Diego. He is artistic director of the Euphoria Brass Band and his recordings and compositions have been nominated for San Diego Music Awards the past six years. In 2019 and 2020 Euphoria Brass Band won the San Diego Music Award for “Best Jazz.” Most recently he has performed with New Orleans trombonist Delfeayo Marsalis, drummer Marvin “Smitty” Smith (Tonight Show Band) and GRAMMY award winning and nominated musicians Oscar Hernandez, Francisco Torres (Poncho Sanchez, Gordon Goodwin) and Javier Cabanillas (Pacific Mambo Orchestra, Cabanijazz Project). Through his career he has had the honor of opening for Dr. John, Trombone Shorty, Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Cowboy Mouth, Rebirth Brass Band, Funky Meters, Big Sam’s Funky Nation, Soul Rebels Brass Band, Honey Island Swamp Band, Rosie Ledet, California Honeydrops, Red Baraat, Chali 2na, and Rusted Root, among others.
