Vanguard Culture presents the ENVZN23: Urban Art Takeover, a visual and performing arts festival that will transform numerous warehouses, industrial spaces, and other urban areas of the Commercial Street corridor in Logan Heights. Two full city blocks will be activated with multi-sensory art interventions by creatives from both sides of the U.S./Mexico border on Saturday, Sept. 2, 2023, from 5 p.m. - 10 p.m. Visitors will experience live dance, puppetry, and theatre performances on warehouse loading docks, a fashion show by Fashion Week San Diego in an industrial storage lot, art installations with curated soundscapes by Tijuana-based multimedia artist MALU, a short film festival inside a crossfit gym, delicious food and drink by local vendors, dance performances along the trolley line and much more. ENVZN23 will respond to the urban landscape by integrating curated sound and theatrical lighting design throughout. ENVZN23 is designed as a recurring event and will return during the year-long celebrations of World Design Capital San Diego Tijuana 2024 for an audience of thousands of design professionals, art patrons, and other culture-seekers from the San Diego Tijuana region and around the world. In this beginner-friendly course, students will learn slab building techniques to create their own vases using simple tools and techniques; no potter’s wheel required. Students will learn the differences between soft slab construction and stiff/hard slab construction to construct their own forms and patterns. The course will focus on three different vase shapes: simple cylinder, teardrop, or angular. Using the same slab building technique, students may also create small bud vases for singular flowers. Students will complete the course with a fully functional vase(s). While this is a beginner friendly course, more intermediate and advanced students may also join. Students will learn how to: wedge clay roll out slabs using a rolling pin and wooden guides compress slabs using a rubber rib and/or paddles strengthen clay in order to reduce air bubbles, cracks, and warping during the drying process use PVC pipes to create cylinder vases cut out shapes using patterns templates made of cardboard or cardstock attach slabs using the “score and slip” process, where joined seams are either visible or invisible decorate vases with ribbon tool or clay texture rollers soften rims of vases using ribs and chimoy clothes on banding wheel Materials: Please purchase a standard size wooden rolling pin and a beginners pottery tool kit. You do not need to purchase an extensive toolkit for this course, but please buy a kit which includes a metal rib, fettling knife, and scoring tool. Beginner kits are often very minimal but if you choose to continue pottery, the latter tools are incredibly helpful and you will likely need them later. If the metal rib, knife, and scoring tool are difficult to find, you can purchase a basic kit and buy these tools separately at Freeform Ceramics in National City, CA. Please bring a notebook/sketchbook and pen to class to keep track of wonderful ideas. In honor of Dia de los Muertos, longtime resident artist Felix Diaz is leading our efforts to include some Day of the Dead celebrations and practices, too. * The Diaz Trio will perform a series of SONES, a traditional musical form originating from various regions in Mexico and used for events like Dia de los Muertos. During this lively, rhythmic, and danceable music, the audience is invited and encouraged to participate, thus creating a celebratory atmosphere. * We’ll also have an ofrenda (altar) to honor both loved ones we’ve lost from our own S4A community and pioneering Mexican surrealist women artists. * Tamales, Pan de Muerto (sweet bread), and Café de Olla (spiced coffee) will be available for purchase, along with our usual fare of snacks and beverages.
