Learn Block Printing on Fabric! Thursday, July 16, 6-8:30 p.m. Learn the process of block printing on fabric in this beginner-friendly 2.5 hour workshop! Led by local-artist and printmaker Kasey Leung, you’ll be guided step-by-step through designing, carving, and hand-printing your very own original block. Use it to create a custom tote bag or tea towel in class – perfect for everyday use or a thoughtful handmade gift. We’ll explore simple pattern-building and placement techniques to help bring your design to life on fabric. The emphasis is on process over perfection, with plenty of room to experiment and enjoy making with your hands. No experience needed and all materials are provided. Feel free to come to class with ideas, inspiration, or printed reference images for printing – just keep in mind that your design will need to fit within a 4×6 inch block. You’ll leave with a finished textile piece and your carved block to take home, so you can keep printing and creating long after the workshops ends! Please note there is a materials fee of $5 paid directly to the instructor at the beginning of class. The closing celebration will include a performance by Matana Roberts (UC San Diego, Department of Music) followed by a discussion with Kamaal Martin (Art Power Equity) and Mashonda Tifrere (curator, ArtLeadHer). Spanning nearly five decades of artistic production, "Full Circle—The Teachings and Her Legacy" is a comprehensive examination of Faith Ringgold’s multidisciplinary practice. The exhibition brings together works created between 1976 and 2023, tracing the artist’s evolution across painting, textile art, and narrative assemblage. Born in Harlem in 1930, Ringgold emerged from the Black Arts Movement as a visionary force, boldly weaving autobiography, social and political activism, and deep reverence for her ancestors into every layer of her work. The exhibition is framed conceptually through Ringgold’s relationship to UC San Diego, where she served as professor of visual arts from 1984 to 2002. This institutional affiliation provides a lens for understanding how her academic philosophy materialized throughout her practice and impacted not only those she mentored at UC San Diego, but generations of artists around the world. Exhibit runs March 23 - April 25. The photo-based and sculptural works in the exhibition examine the history of urban development in Southern California. Working in Los Angeles, Jackie Castillo investigates the relationships between city infrastructure, collective memory and the isolation and anxiety felt by the working class. She documents architectural remnants that reveal the ways that place, labor, memories, and identity become fractured over time. Mónica Arreola approaches similar concerns from the perspective of her hometown, Tijuana. Trained as an architect, she photographs urban developments abandoned mid-construction, revealing the effects of the 2008 United States housing market crash and the financial crisis that reverberated across the border.
