Poway Parade Puts Community Volunteerism at Center Stage Sept. 12 Behind the marching bands and floats at this year's Poway Rotary Parade is a larger community story: who are the people doing the volunteer work that keeps local organizations functioning? “Spirit of Volunteers” is the theme of the 61st annual Poway Rotary Parade, beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday, September 12. Organizers chose the theme to recognize the unusually large number of nonprofit, service and community organizations whose members volunteer their time in Poway and surrounding communities. Grand Marshal John Couvrette, co-chair of the Poway Community Foundation and a longtime community volunteer, is incorporating that message into the parade itself. Working with EDCO, Couvrette is creating a 30-foot flatbed float dedicated to local nonprofit organizations, with volunteers invited to participate together. More than 75 parade entries are expected, representing schools, service clubs, community organizations, businesses and other groups. Among them are the Rotary Club of Poway-Scripps, Poway Unified School District, Poway Chamber of Commerce, Villa de Vida, Poway Library, Soroptimists International of Poway, Poway Adult School, Poway 4-H and the Poway Lions Club. The parade also includes marching bands, dancers, equestrians, vintage tractors and other traditional parade entries. “Edgeless: In the Expanded Field of Painting” brings together four Southern California-based painters whose process incorporates a blend of traditional and nontraditional media as both material and surface. In this exhibition, artists cut, stitch, burn, dye and fire their materials, creating the suggestion of a painting, while also incorporating strategies of sculpture, installation, or performance to work inseparably alongside the act of painting. The exhibition is curated by Jacqueline Marino. In the spirit of Italian Heritage Month, Galbani® Bella Vita Fest celebrates Italian culture with chalk art, Italian wine, food and music – all in the heart of San Diego’s Little Italy. More than 40-plus expert chalk artists, depicting Italian themes, will line the streets of Little Italy, with live Italian music, La Cucina Galbani Cooking Stage with Chef Marco Sciortino, Italian merchants and Italian food for purchase. October is Italian Heritage month, and the festival celebrates the tradition of street painting which began in 16th century Italy with traveling artists, many of whom had been brought into the cities to work on the cathedrals. When the work was done, they would often recreate the paintings of “Madonna” on the pavement; they became known as Madonnari. Street painting thrives today in festivals throughout the world. "The Tiny Exhibition" is a unique, one-day public art event at Liberty Station Arts Districts' First Fridays on June 5, 2026. Featuring a collection of meticulously crafted oil paintings, many are of a jewel-like size, on display inside a Piccola Tiny Home as art gallery organized by Tiny Home Central. A portion of the proceeds will benefit The Warrior Village Projects’ tiny home build program. The exhibition explores themes of scale, luxury, and sustainability, challenging the notion that size dictates value—in both art and living spaces.
