Note: Though this class is offered as part of the Certificate in Memoir Writing, there is no pre-requisite to join this class. All students, members, and nonmembers are encouraged to enroll. In this workshop, students will expand upon what they have learned in Memoir I and II about the basics of memoir writing and character, dialogue, and scene. The focus on this workshop will be on creating a strong character arc and creating a bullet proof structure that will fulfill the potential of the hook. Utilizing either the 6 Journey Writing Plot Spots or the 15 Plot Spots as our structural guides, we will delve deeper into creating parameters, honing your core idea (deciding how to pick and choose what parts of your life to include in your memoir) and perfecting tone and theme. Class structure: Except for the first class, the first hour will be lecture and the second hour will be read and critique where participants can workshop their material or class assignments. Tone of class: We strive to create a supportive, nurturing environment where participants feel encouraged to share, risk and connect to their most creative self. Join OMA's Artist Alliance at Sparks Gallery for the reception of "Elemental" on Sunday, May 25, from 5 p.m. – 8 p.m. OMA's artist alliance is thrilled to present 38 artworks in their third exhibition at Sparks Gallery in San Diego’s historic Gaslamp Quarter downtown. Selected by juror Sonya Sparks, many of the artworks are loosely themed to the title, "Elemental," work that explores the vibrancy and vitality of the core elements—earth, air, fire, and water—that shape the world around us. The exhibition aims to evoke the raw, powerful essence of these elements, revealing their interconnectedness with life and the environment. The Elemental theme highlights how these fundamental components permeate our daily existence, inspire creativity, and foster growth, yet also have the capacity for destruction and transformation. Cristian Fatu is an award-winning concert violinist and violin teacher based in Orange County. Currently he is teaching violin at the Orange County School for the Arts and Orange County Music and Dance. He is also a substitute musician for Pacific Symphony and LA Ballet as well as a freelancer in the studio recording industry. He has performed in many TV and film productions as well as recordings with diverse artists in the iconic Hollywood studios such as Capitol Records, Fox Studios, Warner Brothers Studios and others around town. Between 2014- 2018 he was the first violinist of the Montclaire String Quartet, Adjunct Faculty at the West Virginia State University and concertmaster of the Charleston Chamber Orchestra. Since 2013 he is a member of the Violin Society of America Oberlin Acoustics Workshop where he explores the physics of string instruments with fellow musicians, scientists and violin makers. Cristian holds a Bachelor’s degree from the National Music University of Bucharest, a Master’s and an Artist Diploma from Park University, MO where he studied with Ben Sayevich. His teachers and coaches include Gil Shaham, Stefan Gheorghiu, Eric Rosenblith, Shmuel Ashkenasi, Gabriel Croitoru and Vladimir Spivakov, to name a few. Evangeliya Delizonas-Khukhua – Born in a family of musicians in 1992, Evangeliya discovered the piano at the early age of three. She gave her first concert with Moscow Chamber Orchestra when she was five. In 1998, she entered the prestigious world school for gifted children Moscow Central Music School of the Moscow State Tchaikovsky Conservatory as a student of Professor Tamara Koloss. Evangeliya is a member of the International Vladimir Spivakov Charity Foundation. Being part of that society, she has been performing in the best venues in Moscow, including all the halls of the Moscow Conservatory, Moscow International Performing Arts Center, Tchaikovsky Concert Hall at the Moscow Philharmonic, Armory Chamber of Kremlin, The Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts, Moscow State University, Beethoven Concert Hall in the Bolshoi Theatre, The International Arts Center of the Roerich Moscow Museum. She has been employed as collaborative pianist at the Moscow State Bolshoi Ballet Academy of Choreography and as accompanist at the Vocal Department of the Moscow State Tchaikovsky Conservatory. Her experience in United States includes Piano Instructor position at Kansas City Academy for Music, Kansas City School of Music, Vienna Music Institute in Irvine (CA), and Choral Accompanist position at Christ Episcopal Church in St. Joseph, Missouri and in Los Angeles, California. SDSU faculty Dr. Eric Starr will present the second annual Trombonanza, a recital celebrating the versatility of the trombone. Featuring repertoire spanning from the Baroque era to contemporary works, the program highlights the instrument’s broad expressive range and often-underappreciated role as a solo voice. This recital invites audiences to experience a diverse variety of musical styles and instrumentations. This bold, eclectic program spans centuries and styles, opening with James Tenney’s meditative "Swell Piece" and Timothy McCormack’s dense, immersive "Heavy Matter." C.P.E. Bach’s "Unaccompanied Sonata" offers elegant contrast, while Henri Tomasi’s "Être ou ne pas être" dramatizes Hamlet’s soliloquy through powerful solo performance. Tommy Pedersen’s "Blue Topaz" adds jazzy flair, and Radiohead’s "Motion Picture Soundtrack" brings haunting beauty in a striking new arrangement. The evening closes with Haydn’s radiant "Achieved is the Glorious Work," a fitting finale celebrating musical creation in all its forms.
