Learn to Weave Classic Houndstooth! Saturday, December 5, 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. In this 5-hour hands-on workshop, weavers who’ve explored the direct warping (rigid heddle) technique will learn to warp to create a multi-color textile, creating the classic pattern of houndstooth, also known as puppytooth or pinwheel. This class is a great next step for weavers of all skill levels. In class, students will learn best practices for warping their looms with multiple colors. You may borrow a rigid heddle loom to warp on or bring your own (please leave a note in the comments with which loom you will bring to warp, if bringing your own). The remainder of the class will cover learning to weave with more than one color as weft and how to manage and create clean and balanced selvedges. Each student will create their own finished 10-20″ long houndstooth textile to take home. Prerequisite: Students must have taken Warp & Weave on a Rigid Heddle Loom or be comfortable warping a rigid heddle loom using the direct warping method. All materials to warp & weave a houndstooth textile are included for use. If you’re interested in learning to warp and weave on your own rigid heddle loom, please email Instructor Jeanine Ertl with what type of loom you have in advance. No experience necessary. Sunday, November 22, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Beginners welcome! In this introductory workshop, you’ll learn a fun, accessible method of applying enamel with stencils through simple, easy‑to‑follow demonstrations. The studio provides all tools and materials, and you’ll create a vividly colored pendant or pair of earrings using the same art form practiced by ancient Egyptians, Fabergé, art deco masters, and contemporary designers. You’ll work with copper and pure silver foil over copper as your base, sift powdered glass enamel, use stencils, and learn how to safely fire your piece in a kiln. Choose a premade stencil, bring your own, or get creative with any small flat item (1.5″ or smaller) that has an interesting silhouette or perforations. You’ll have time to complete at least one finished piece, experiment with transparent and opaque colors, and enjoy how approachable the science behind this ancient craft can be. This workshop is for beginners and anyone wanting a refresher. Masks and safety goggles will be provided. Learn to Carve a Spoon! Saturday, October 31, 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. -OR- Sunday, November 29, 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. Beginning spoon carving. In this introduction course of carving Woodworker Paul Maschka will be sharing the ancient style of green wood hand carving with simple but very precise hand tools–a small carving axe, straight blade carving knife and a curved hook knife. With proper techniques, green wood can be intricately sculpted into extremely beautiful, functional and unique pieces of art. Paul specializes in Viking-era cutlery. This Scandinavian style is still being crafted around the world. In this workshop, students will be creating a straight tea spoon or straight cooking spoon. This class is designed for the beginner as well as more experienced carvers. There is no prerequisite for this class. All of the necessary tools and materials will be available to students for this class. Tools and chopping blocks will be available for purchase after the class. No experience necessary.
