This December you will have the rare opportunity to witness a living Nativity Scene, one that sings with the voices of angels and shepherds! Musica Vitale invites you to a staged performance of Laud to the Nativity by Italian composer Ottorino Respighi on 12/13 (St. Paul's Cathedral) and 12/18 (Christ Church Coronado). Although Lauda per la Natività del Signore is generally presented as a concert piece, Respighi's wife Elsa left detailed instructions for a staged production. Our director, the noted singer-actress Angelina Réaux, might not follow these to the letter, but she is excited to bring this lesser-known work to life in the form of a popular Italian tradition, the presepe vivente or living nativity scene. Our distinguished soloists--Alberto Estanol, Shepherd (Opera Tijuana), Janelle de Stefano, Mary (Professor of Music, Santa Monica College) and Lisa Parente, Angel (San Diego Opera Singing Artist)--along with the chorus of Musica Vitale and a woodwind ensemble will breathe new life into the Christmas story, as told by the imaginative and innovative Ottorino Respighi. Culinary Historians of San Diego will present “The History of San Diego As Seen Through a Wine Glass,” by Richard Carrico, at 10:30 am November 16, in the Neil Morgan Auditorium of the San Diego Central Library, 330 Park Blvd. Anthropologist, historian, and perhaps most importantly, wine maker, Richard Carrico will take the audience back through more than 240 years of wine making in San Diego County. We will have answers to these questions: who made the first wines; what and where was the first commercial winery; and is it true that at one time San Diego County rivaled Sonoma in wine production? What was the role of our indigenous people in the wine industry? In a well illustrated PowerPoint presentation, Carrico will stress how wine history is a clear reflection of our county’s history as a whole. Today we are experiencing a renaissance of wine making and once again, San Diego County is poised to take its place among the wine growing regions of the United States. Richard L. Carrico, award winner writer, educator, anthropologist and wine maker, is a retired lecturer in the Department of American Indian Studies at San Diego State University and lives in Warner Springs. His research has made significant contributions to our understanding of the local Native American and Hispanic cultures. He is also a principal in his firm Recuerdos Research where he serves as a consultant to local Indian tribes, government agencies and private firms. He has a master’s degree from San Diego State University in both History and Anthropology, and has completed classes on wine making at UC Davis. The 2024 "Trans Diaries" is Led by the incredible Joshua Gershick and guided veteran Broadway and TV director, Shakina Nayfack, featuring a powerful cast including Lee Faelnar Te (fifth year participant), Seth Gomez (second year participant), and welcoming newcomers B. Alexander, and Jen Winslow as they make their "Trans Diaries" debut!

Join us for Day Camp at ArtReach! Lean into the season of fall with an engaging art workshop that encourage students to practice and experience gratitude, coziness, and community with their peers during a season of friendship and reflection. Students will be inspired by artists such as Fruit Face, Boba Jelly, David Hockney, and Yayoi Kusama. This session is for elementary age students in grades K through 5th.
