Originally a gospel singer, Dorothy Mae "Lady Dottie" Whitsett's early career included performing with Kool and the Gang and Clarence Carter, among others. Back then, she called herself Miss Dynamite, moving around from residences in Alabama, New Jersey, Portland, Seattle, and Atlanta. After moving from Atlanta to San Diego in 1984, she eventually formed a jazz duo after meeting keyboardist Joey Guevara in a local piano bar. They were joined by Guevara's bandmates from Operator X, Stephen Rey (bass) and Brian Cantrell (drums). Rounding out the band are two guitarists, Isaiah Mitchell and Nathan Beale (of Dirty Sweet), as well as Joey's brother Dan Guevara on horns. The band won two 2007 San Diego Music Awards, for Best Blues and Best Blues Album, as well as landing Best Blues again in 2008. They earned another Best Blues Album award in September 2009, as well as winning Best Blues (again) in 2011 and 2012. As of 2009, they are signed with Hi-Speed Soul Records, a label launched by local music store M-Theory Records. ARTS DISTRICT Liberty Station is thrilled to announce a brand-new gallery exhibit opening in Gallery 201, formerly known as Martha Pace Swift Gallery. Presenting her work in ARTS DISTRICT for the first time, Puerto Rican photographer, Delana Delgado, will debut new 35mm and collage works titled "AROUND THE WAY GIRL," curated by Dinah Poellnitz, beginning on Friday, November 3. Delana’s lens captures a glimpse into her upbringing and the profound influence of culture, women, tradition and la comunidad on her artistic journey. Her solo debut invites art lovers to intimately explore not just her own life but also the various communities that resonate with her work. Through this exhibit, Delana is making way for a collective space at the table where communities of color, service workers, street vendors, and the working class can be celebrated. Most of all, she uses her work to pay respect, honor, and preserve the beauty of her community, and the people within them. Art Scene West and Matt Drey Arts are co-producing an art exhibition of recent works by two well respected, veteran SoCal landscape artists, Darrel McPherson and John Cornfield. McPherson began painting in 1970, moving from abstract in his early work at Indiana University to his career commitment to landscape impressionism, influenced by Pissarro, McPherson paints exclusively in oils and has painted continuously up to the present. McPherson estimates a career total of 1500+ paintings and he has followers all over San Diego County and throughout California. John Cornfield has been drawing and painting for over 20 years, including with many of the top plein air artists in the country. Inspired by an older generation of Southwest and California Impressionists, Cornfield's landscapes follow in their unique use of color and form. Cornfield’s paintings are found in private and public collections throughout southern California. A graduate of UCSD, Cornfield has many local San Diego followers. Many of his collectors say that his paintings evoke a sense of “vintage California”. Cornfield paints exclusively in acrylics.
