Built for the 1935 California Pacific International Exposition, a complex of now 32 single-story cottages, known as the House of Pacific Relations International Cottages, occupies an area of under two acres. The variety of cultures represented is matched by an equally diverse floral landscape from around the world. While the charming buildings draw most visitors’ attention, it’s worth taking a closer look at the rich variety of trees and other flora. Forever Balboa Park offers thematic park tours that focus on the park’s unique biodiversity and highlight the park’s horticultural wonders on the second Saturday of each month. Led by park volunteer and horticultural enthusiast Bill Edwards, the free tours leave from the Visitors Center at 10 a.m. unless otherwise indicated. Walks last 1.5 to 2 hours and are typically less than 1 mile on level terrain. It is advised that potential attendees contact the Balboa Park Visitors Center prior to the scheduled walk to determine if there are any last-minute changes or cancellations to the tours. About Mikan Zlatkovich Born a musical prodigy in former Yugoslavia, Mikan started his professional jazz career as a teenager whose immense talent was quickly recognised by top musicians, the audiences and music critics alike. Throughout the '80s he remained a major feature on the thriving Yugoslav jazz scene. In the early '90s, however, he decided to pursue bigger musical challenges, at first in New York, and ten years later in San Diego, where he regularly shares the stage with the likes of Gilbert Castellanos, Charles McPherson, Allison Adams-Tucker, Chuck McPherson, Bob Magnusson, Rob Thorsen, Jamie Shadowlight, and many other notable performers. On piano or synthesizer, Mikan's fiery performances continue to thrill and excite his audiences. He connects jazz fans in many different settings, from concert halls to small clubs to street corners. Christopher Cozier’s work as an artist, writer and curator aims to explore and affect conventional readings of the Caribbean, revealing alternative narratives and interpretations. Every Monday at Noon Free concerts at Noon every Monday year-round . . . no wonder the Mini-Concerts are the longest-running and one of the most popular classical music series at the library! This series was founded by Glenna Hazleton in 1970 at the Athenaeum, and has been going strong ever since. The concerts feature both local and touring musicians, prize-winning students, university music faculty members, local chamber ensembles . . . and the repertoire also includes jazz, folk, and world music.
