Presented by the Department of Visual Arts and the Suraj Israni Center for Cinematic Arts at UC San Diego, "Off-Screen Space" includes experimental narrative films, video art, multi-channel video installations and a cinematic performance - all made by artists who reside or created the work on the west coast and in the region. The works in the show exist across every surface of the gallery and expand the experience and expectations of the screen. “Off-screen space” is a term used primarily in cinema that refers to a sensation that the image, sound, action and ideas can move past the edges of the screen. In this exhibition, the screen is simultaneously the object, the suggestion and the idea. Get ready for a spooktacular evening in Little Italy as we bring back one of our most beloved traditions—Trick-or-Treat on India Street! Little ghouls, goblins, witches, and superheroes are invited to dress up and stroll through the charming streets of Little Italy for an urban-style trick-or-treating adventure. Families can visit participating businesses along historic India Street and adjacent streets to collect sweet treats and enjoy the festive atmosphere. The Piazza della Famiglia will take a hauntingly fun turn as it transforms into a scene straight out of "The Nightmare Before Christmas," featuring a giant 13-foot Jack Skellington, towering pumpkin stacks, and plenty of Instagram-worthy photo ops. Guests can also browse local fall vendors, curated by the Little Italy Mercato, offering frightfully fun finds and ghoulish goodies perfect for the season. Event maps will be available at the Piazza della Famiglia (India & W. Date Streets), or visitors can scan QR codes displayed on A-frames along India Street to access a virtual map of participating businesses. For everyone’s safety and enjoyment, W. Cedar through W. Accelerating Evolution to Create New Medicines – Front Row lecture with Christian Diercks, PhD Biologic drugs account for about a quarter of recent drug approvals, and most are antibodies. Although antibodies have transformed treatment for many conditions, they mainly work by binding to their targets. But some diseases may benefit more from therapeutics that can selectively alter those targets instead. In this free Front Row lecture, Assistant Professor Christian Diercks will discuss how he harnesses accelerated evolution—a laboratory process that speeds up cycles of genetic change and selection—to engineer therapeutic enzymes that actively break down or modify disease-related molecules. At the center of this work is T7-ORACLE, a synthetic biology platform developed by Diercks’ lab. It continuously introduces mutations into selected genes in bacteria to rapidly evolve proteins, including enzymes, at large scale with minimal researcher intervention. The Diercks lab is using T7-ORACLE to evolve enzymes for the selective degradation of the painful crystals behind gout flares, and to target voltage-gated ion channels involved in chronic pain as a non-addictive alternative to opioid-based therapeutics.
