  • One of the predecessors of American folk music is European music from the Renaissance era, roughly the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Courtly Noyse brings that music to life, complete with period repertoire, costumes, and instruments, some of which you will recognize as the grandparents of our guitars, violins, and dulcimers. This will be an intimate concert with little or no amplification. Courtly Noyse plays recorders, viola da gamba, vielle, krummhorns, cornamuse, cornetti, shawms, sacbuts, Renaissance guitar, chalumeau, hurdy gurdy, bowed psaltery, mandolin, gemshorns, rackett, and various percussion instruments (and this list is constantly growing!). They may also cast their instruments aside at the drop of a (Tudor) hat, and burst into five-part vocal harmony. Jay Sacks plays recorder, cornetto, shawm, krummhorn, chalumeau, gemshorn, cavaquihno, cornamuse, percussion, and sings tenor. He has played with the Los Angeles Junior Philharmonic Orchestra, the UCLA Symphonic Band, the UCSD Wind Ensemble, the Merrye Windes, and The Westwynde Consort. He has sung with the La Jolla Symphony Chorus, the San Diego Master Chorale, Musique Classique, Schola Pacifica, and Full Measure Carolers. He presently plays with The San Diego Jazz Big Band and The Kearny Mesa Concert Band. Sandra Stram plays viola da gamba, vielle, recorder, and krummhorn, and sings soprano. She retired after thirty-four years teaching strings and recorder in San Diego County public schools. She still works as an adjudicator and clinician for SCSBOA, MENC, and Festivals of Music. Sandra holds a MM degree in viol performance, and also plays Baroque violin in Kensington Baroque Orchestra. She has served on the Board of the San Diego Early Music Society and frequently performed for the their “Old Master” concert series. While continuing to play violin and viola with local Baroque chamber groups, she also plays fiddle with the bands Billy Lee and the Gulf Coasters and The Wild Oats. Vickie Jenkins plays recorder, cornamuse, krummhorn, harpsichord, percussion, gemshorn, and sings. She teaches music at The Child’s Primary School and Gateways Summer School, and taught piano lessons for fifty years. During the holiday season, she sang with Full Measure Carolers. Vickie has performed with ensembles at San Diego Mesa College, Scripps College, and SDSU, and has a music degree from Scripps College. Other former groups include Pacific Camerata, Madonna Non Papa, Melismata, Las Voces, and Schola Cantorum. Laury Flora started his musical career with piano lessons at age five. He went on to study French horn and other brass, guitar, and violin. He has performed vocally with various choirs and madrigal groups, and founded several barbershop quartets. In addition to singing, he plays recorder, krummhorn, rackett, psaltery, gemshorn, sacbut, lute, and cornetto. He sings with the La Jolla Renaissance Singers, and has sung with Full Measure Carolers, an a cappella ensemble which performs holiday music in San Diego and Orange Counties. Laury built the krummhorns, psaltery, and rackett that Courtly Noyse plays. Lissette Ryan is a mezzo soprano who plays the harp, cittern, guitar, harpsichord, recorder, crumhorn, and hurdy gurdy. She teaches music in Alpine, finding immense joy in encouraging young musicians. You can also find her regularly performing with the Storytellers of San Diego, where she pairs harp with traditional storytelling, and with the duo String and Wheel. Cathe Sobke holds degrees in music composition and music theory from SDSU. She grew up playing piano, clarinet, and guitar, and was introduced to early music during graduate studies about twenty-five years ago. Recently retired from teaching at Southwestern College, she continues to teach privately and enjoys performing in many early music groups including The Goliards, as well as Kensington Baroque Orchestra, Dolce Dolore, The Granada Consort, Musica Nova Anitiqua, and Ensemble Lonato. • San Diego’s Songwriter Sanctuary is back for a new year of original music in a space that sings, recently announcing the entire 2025 schedule (complete with a limited run of season passes), which will commence with a two-year anniversary concert on Friday, January 31 featuring intimate in-the-round performances by Jeff Berkley, Will Stucky, and Shelbi Bennett w/ The Midnight Pine. The event will be guest-hosted by Lauren Leigh of Writers Round SD, the sister series of Songwriter Sanctuary. (4650 Mansfield St. Suggested Donation $10. All ages. Doors 6:30 p.m., Music 7 p.m.) Introducing Season Passes For the first time, Songwriter Sanctuary is offering season passes, on sale now through January 31. The passes grant all-access entry to every show in 2025 - a total of 11 concerts featuring 33 acclaimed San Diego-based (or affiliated) acts. Additional perks include a complimentary drink at each event, six guest passes to be used throughout the year, and recognition on the Songwriter Sanctuary website. Series curator Lindsay White highlights the significance of this initiative: “Pre-selling season passes help us guarantee fair pay for our artists while keeping the series financially accessible for all members of the community. Our goal is to grow this unique listening room series without compromising artist compensation or community access, but we need support from our neighbors to do so. We see touring acts charging as much or more for just one concert, so we hope our original music-loving audience will consider the value of a season pass, not only as a way to shop local, but also to stretch their entertainment budget for the year.” A Spectrum of Talent Songwriter Sanctuary has become a beloved showcase for San Diego’s deep pool of original artists. Acclaimed SD Music Hall of Fame songwriter and producer (not to mention preacher’s kid and natural orator) Jeff Berkley hosts with the charming wit and irreverence he has honed through decades of performances, while White approaches series curation as an opportunity to advocate for artists and community-building. Says White: “You’ll find some folky favorites and established acts, but I also try to platform a spectrum of artists and styles that represent our vibrant scene. Ultimately, it’s about coming together to experience the beauty and power of a great song.” Since its debut in January 2021, Songwriter Sanctuary has rarely featured repeat acts—a reflection of San Diego’s rich roster of talented creatives. Drawing from music scene mainstays and what White describes as a “mile-long” list of artist submissions, the showcase’s storytelling, Nashville-style round format invites artists to share the stories behind their songs and even collaborate by improvising on each other’s music, all while taking turns in the spotlight. For its 2-Year Anniversary concert on Friday, January 31, Berkley will hand over hosting duties to Lauren Leigh and perform as one of the evening’s three acts. The SD Hall of Famer and multi-SDMA winner performed in the inaugural show alongside White and original series curators Ben Grace Gilmore and Karyn Thurston Gilmore’s duo Story & Tune, who have since relocated to Portland, OR. Rounding out the bill will be San Diego’s own Will Stucky and Shelbi Bennett with a stripped down version of her SDMA-winning act The Midnight Pine. An Affirming Space Though not religiously affiliated with venue host and series partner Normal Heights United, Songwriter Sanctuary thrives on a harmonious collaboration between White, Berkley, and NHU Pastor Molly Lorden. “I often call the sanctuary the ‘fourth featured act' because it is just as jaw-droppingly gorgeous as the music and energy that fills it,” said White. “Molly, our sound tech Honza Kriwenky, and the many church members who volunteer their time continue to be such amazing teammates in this project. They intentionally offer a safe and affirming space to all members of their community, which has resulted in some incredibly healing moments for performers and attendees alike. Normal Heights United should teach other churches how to church.” Community aside, the century-old sanctuary's aesthetic charm speaks for itself. Sparkling lights strung across lofty ceilings, natural reverb, and a cozy circular seating arrangement create an inviting atmosphere perfectly suited for intimate performances and soaring vocals. You don’t have to be religious to feel the spirit. Event Details: Date: Friday, January 31, 2025 Location: Normal Heights United Church, 4650 Mansfield St, San Diego, CA 92116 Time: Doors 6:30 p.m., Show 7 p.m. - 9 p.m. Suggested Donation: $10 (all ages), but please be generous in your support of these top-tier talents. • Breast cancer survivor and local musician, Nena Anderson presents a Dolly Parton tribute concert, look-alike contest, and breast cast exhibit/auction on Valentine’s Day (February 14, 2025) at Belly Up in Solana Beach. A portion of ticket sales, a donation drive, and an online auction will benefit the Keep A Breast Foundation's (KAB) 25th Anniversary. Celebrating her “cancerversary,” Anderson created this event to bring awareness about breast cancer through art while showcasing local artists, especially (but not solely) women. The concert features Dolly’s hits from the 60s to today, performed by Nena Anderson, Brawley, and the Sure Thing Band, with special guest vocalists and musicians. Dolly Parton, known just as widely for her figure as for her music, inspires this event with her decades of longevity as a performer, songwriter, entrepreneur, fashion icon, and philanthropist. A Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers look-alike contest involves the audience and performers, with prizes for the best Dolly, Kenny, couple, and honorable mention. Anderson’s curated group of guest vocalists and musicians span various music genres and experience, including Rap, Country, R&B, World, and Pop. All are established recording artists, songwriters, and touring musicians. Featured guest vocalists are (alphabetically, photos above L-R): Emily Afton, Matt Axton, Beebs, Faith Belle, Kimmi Bitter, Adrian Demain, Rheanna Downey, Molly Jenson, Laura Levenhagen, Natal1e, Tim Petersen, Jess Roberts, Whitney Shay, and Laura Jane Willcock, and featured instrumentalists Kateland Raftery and Gayle Skidmore. Anderson sings during the show and leads the two bands backing the guest vocalists. Local honky-tonk heroes and multiple San Diego Award nominee, Brawley, starts the night off with Parton’s earlier career hits, including Porter Wagoner and Parton songs. They are followed by the Sure Thing band, a group of all-star session/tour musicians who will set the groove for Parton’s pop and r&b hits. The exhibit and auction consist of seven painted plaster breast casts, a signature of Keep A Breast. The casts feature busts of women involved in the production of the 2025 event and will be displayed at the concert. They will be auctioned online beginning February 14, with the closing date and reception to be announced. For the donation drive, individuals can make a tax-deductible donation towards VIP ticket packages. Local businesses and national brands contribute in-kind or cash in exchange for global recognition through KAB’s extensive social media and online presence.
