Featuring some of San Diego’s finest theatrical comedians: Kenny Bordieri, Samantha Ginn, AJ Knox, and Erica Marie Weisz. In producing this show, we are honored to welcome our first Native American playwright to the Ray Charles Stage in the Conrad Prebys Theatre at the Dea Hurston New Village Arts Center. This October, Distinction Gallery is proud to present "Pre-Apocalyptic Landscapes”, an exhibition of new works by Gabe Leonard, a celebrated cinematic artist. 

Known for narrative paintings with swashbuckling desperados and femme fatales, Leonard draws inspiration from many genres of film, such as westerns and noir. Leonard's brushwork is as electrifying as his subjects, and bold warm and cold colors denote the unfolding drama of his scenes. Longtime fans and newcomers alike will find fresh reason to delight in his new western genre compositions. 

"Pre-Apocalyptic Landscapes" opens with a public reception with the artist from 6 -10 p.m. on October 12th. Visitors are encouraged to dress up inspired by Gabe's art or in their own costumes. The "best dressed," as chosen by Gabe, will receive a full set of books with a custom slipcover valued at $1000. There will be live music and drinks available for purchase from Last Spot by Tortari. Musicians from the engaging Sabrosas Latin Orchestra bring the vibrant sounds of classic Afro-Cuban and salsa music to life. Hear beloved tunes popularized by the Buena Vista Social Club, along with other iconic pieces from these rich musical traditions. Blending music with educational storytelling, this program will explore the history and evolution of these genres from Africa to the Caribbean and highlight the European influences that shaped them. This diverse group of performers hails from the United States, Mexico, and Cuba, bringing authentic cultural perspectives to the stage. A film screening of "Saging The World" with Rose Ramirez in the City College AH building room 306 Sage smudging has become a viral trend, common in movies, TV shows, social media, and cleansing rituals—people burning sage bundles in the hope of purifying space and clearing bad energy. Instead of healing, the appropriated use of saging in popular culture is having a harmful effect. Indigenous communities have tended a relationship with white sage for thousands of generations. White sage (Salvia apiana) only occurs in southern California and northern Baja California, Mexico. Today, poachers are stealing metric tons of this plant from the wild to supply international demand. The documentary film "Saging the World" spotlights the ecological and cultural issues intertwined with white sage, centering on the voices of Native advocates who have long protected and cherished this plant. This short documentary was produced by Rose Ramirez, Deborah Small, and the California Native Plant Society to foster awareness and inspire action for white sage. Kilma Lattin, Our Worlds Project, founder talk and discussion in the AH building room 306 at San Diego City College OurWorlds is a communication platform using extended reality to transform public and private spaces into interactive environments. We are activating content in select cities and locations around the world. This is being done for educational purposes, as well as entertainment. OurWorlds will continue to showcase an ever expanding selection of contributors and performances, beginning with a series dedicated to Native Americans.

Wet felting fun! October 5, 9 a.m. - Noon Join us for a creative time around wool and fellowship! In this 3-hour workshop you will learn the ancient art of wet felting — the process of loose wool becoming a fabric (felt). This textile art technique has been used for millenniums in the making of rugs, clothing, and homes (yurts). Instructor Sylviane Collier will demonstrate the technique, taking you step-by-step through the project and providing guidance along the way so you may enjoy the creative process and let your inner artist take the lead. First you will create your own picture by layering wool fibers (you will have a wide selection of dyed merino wool to choose from) to finish with the binding of all the fibers using a wet felting technique. We will use bamboo mats, water and soap for the felting process. It is not a messy process, just a wet one. Towels will be provided. Each student will create a one-of-a-kind 8”x 8” “painting.” Images of flowers, landscapes and animals will be provided for inspiration. Students are also welcome to bring their own. A material fee of $10 (cash only) to be paid to the instructor at the start of the class. No prior experience necessary. Ages 14+ welcome! Gallery reception for "Bird Singers" at City Gallery at San Diego City College. City Gallery is a space for exploring art across all media and genres. The gallery showcases work that reflects the experiences and issues of the world in which we all live today. Located in the heart of City College and downtown San Diego, City Gallery is uniquely situated within San Diego's cultural and civic centre. It provides City College's diverse local student population access to art through innovative exhibitions, community collaborations, workshops and lectures. The gallery engages and inspires the academic population and surrounding San Diego community.
