Come explore the foundations of painting! This acrylic class provides instruction in basic and intermediate painting techniques. Students will develop technical skills in color theory, composition, brushwork, layering, and surface preparation through a series of guided projects. This class is suitable for teens of all skill levels and supports the development of a strong foundation in acrylic painting within a focused studio environment. Susan Walters is an oil painter who has taught art (K–6th grade) at the Gillispie School for over 30 years. She studied fine art at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and the Art Students League of New York. Prior to painting, Susan was a printmaker for Ruth Leaf Studio in NYC. Saturday, May 9 marks the 34th anniversary of the National Association of Letter Carriers’ Stamp Out Hunger® Food Drive, the nation’s largest one-day food drive. Each year on the second Saturday in May, letter carriers collect non-perishable food donations left by customers at their mailboxes. The food goes directly to the San Diego Food Bank and other local pantries to help families in San Diego County who are facing hunger. Over the past 30 years, the drive has collected more than 1.94 billion pounds of food nationwide. Yet the need remains high—over 47 million Americans, including 13 million children and 7.4 million seniors, experience food insecurity. The drive is especially important in spring, when many food pantries run low on supplies and school meal programs are unavailable to many children. How to help: Place a bag of non-perishable food by your mailbox on Saturday, May 9, 2026, and your letter carrier will pick it up and deliver it the San Diego Food Bank and other local food pantries. "Occupy Thirdspace III: The Park" tells the visual story of public and collective land use through the perspective of artists whose work has touched, traversed, and activated the site of Friendship Park. This historical landmark located at the westernmost end of our southern border, has been a meeting place and source of hope across divides, later a site of concentrated militarization. The objects in "OTS III" work together to resurrect the spirit of Friendship Park as a bridge, encounter, and neighborhood.
