These are the very real stories of San Diego native, Jenna Armerding (vocals/guitar). In 2025 she quickly went from living room demos to performing with her first band, Poor Thing, featuring her brother, Andrew, on lead guitar. Their last name, Armerding, literally translates to “poor thing” in German. They’re joined by the unflappable Eggy “Eggman” Aragon (bass) and Tom Peart (drums). Shelbi Bennett guest stars with back-up vocals and touches of synth/percussion. Whether her delivery is sweet or sassy, Jenna’s confessional songwriting remains equally intimate and vulnerable. Some songs are grungy, others are dreamy, shifting in dynamics from pretty and moody to distorted and gritty. It’s indie, it’s rock, it’s even a little alt country when she’s got the right boots on. Big influences include PJ Harvey, Patti Smith, Garbage, Mazzy Star, Tom Petty, Slowdive, Radiohead, and Smashing Pumpkins. Poor Thing’s debut full-length album will be available on vinyl (April 2026).

The Fiesta Cinco de Mayo celebration began in Old Town over 40 years ago, the brain child of Diane Powers. The Chamber took over running the event a few years ago. Although it is a slightly paired down version, it is still a vibrant two day event. Over the years this event has grown to become a San Diego tradition. Fiesta Cinco de Mayo is now celebrated in many communities in San Diego and around the U.S. The events in the Gaslamp and Old Town are now the largest celebration in San Diego. Downtown is a perfect venue with with over six blocks of culture and traditional entertainment. Vintage & Book Sale to Support Library The Friends of the Oceanside Public Library invite the community to a Vintage & Book Sale on Saturday, June 20, in the Oceanside Civic Center Library Community Room and Courtyard at 330 North Coast Highway. The event features vintage items for purchase, as well as a large book sale, with most used books on sale for only one dollar. The sale opens at 10 a.m. to all, but begins early, at 9 a.m., for Friends of the Oceanside Public Library members only. Memberships, starting at $20 per year, are available for purchase at the door. The Library has creative volunteers, staff, and Friends members who have collected and donated an array of one-of-a-kind keepsakes and vintage items most often found at estate sales or antique stores. Treasures are from every corner: jewelry, home goods, décor, accessories, and art, to name a few. Thousands of great bargain books will be available for purchase. The book sale offers a mix of books and DVDs, all priced at just $1 each. Unique gift books, art works, and puzzles are specially priced. Volunteers will be on hand to assist attendees in finding and purchasing items. The event will also feature works by local artists. Proceeds from memberships and fundraising events such as these make Library programs for all ages possible. The Friends of the Library support everything from purchasing books for the Library’s collection to funding events such as storytimes, teen activities, technology assistance, and community-centered programming—including cultural celebrations, Homework Helpers, and Library Club for adults with special needs. The North City district in San Marcos is celebrating Earth Day with an evening of sustainable style, community, and conversation at Union Cowork on April 21 from 5–9 p.m. The event kicks off at 5 p.m. with a denim shop, swap, and thrift experience featuring live styling featuring Swap & Shop SD, Positive Phee, and a collective of local makers including Sew Loka, eM Pulse, and Avartan Avenue, all reimagining denim through reuse, repair, and reinvention. At 6 p.m., guests can settle in for a screening of the acclaimed documentary "RiverBlue," which explores the environmental impact of the fashion industry from river to runway to landfill. The film is followed by a post-screening conversation at 7:45 p.m. with experts leading the sustainability movement in San Diego, including Marissa Acosta, Zero Waste and Sustainability Specialist at CSUSM, and Liz of Sustainability is Sexy, a nonprofit founder and community advocate.
