  • This webinar will address mid-scale composting for farms and ranches with moderate quantities of organic materials including manure, crop residue, and food scraps. Improper disposal of organic waste can lead to pest problems, create health issues for livestock, and contaminate local water sources. Adding compost to your soil conserves water, mitigates erosion, sequesters carbon, and can help your plants thrive. For Healthy Soils Program awardees, making your own compost allows for better on-site nutrient cycling and a finished product tailored to your needs. What is an Aerated Static Pile (ASP)? ASPs offer a simple and cost-effective method for composting organic materials. These contained systems force air through the compost pile, encouraging rapid decomposition without laborious turning while achieving temperatures needed for safe, weed-free compost. The system we will discuss is perfect for a small amount of livestock (for instance, one to ten horses) and small- to medium-sized farms or orchards. Come join us as we virtually visit Solana Center’s site in Encinitas and other successful examples of ASP composting throughout the San Diego region. We’ll discuss how Solana Center has integrated ASP systems into our community composting program to enable safe and efficient composting of food waste from over 100 local households into a high-quality soil amendment. This webinar will be held using Zoom, so please note that you will need to have the Zoom application installed on your device (computer, smartphone, or tablet) to attend and participate. You will receive an email with the link and password to join upon registering. The webinar will be recorded, and the recording will be shared with attendees in a follow-up email and made available continuously on Solana Center’s Healthy Soils Program page. In this webinar, we will cover: - The benefits of composting manure and other on-farm materials - Using ASPs to minimize labor without costly equipment - System selection, feedstocks, and preparations - Managing pest and smell concerns with neighbors - Ensuring compliance with San Diego County ordinances and/or Healthy Soils Program requirements Made possible through generous funding by County of San Diego, California Department of Food and Agriculture and California Climate Investments. • The Coronado Historical Association invites you to the next lecture of our popular Wine & Lecture series. We will delve into the fascinating history of the Chinese-American experience of running a well-known, longtime establishment in San Diego. Established in 1888 and lasting nearly a century, Quon Mane’s on Fifth Avenue purveyed porcelains, silks, and other so-called Chinese and Japanese “fancy goods”. The store grew up with San Diego to become its premier Asian retail business, with branch shops in Coronado, La Jolla, and elsewhere. In a presentation richly illustrated with images from the Quon family, the San Diego History Center, and the Coronado Historical Association, you will find out how businessman Quon Mane and his brothers contributed to the founding of the Hotel del Coronado, made connections with many of the city’s biggest names, and gained a foothold in turn-of-the-century San Diego. During this presentation, you will also gain insight into what the Chinese-Exclusion era experience was like in San Diego and how it was both similar and different to the Chinese-American experience across California. If you have any questions please email info@coronadohistory.org or call (619) 435-7242.
  • Summer Movies in the Park is the largest free and family-friendly outdoor movie series in San Diego County, with dozens of hosting sites and over a hundred screenings. It launched in 2007 as a ‘take back our parks’ initiative – in sync with the County’s Live Well vision to sustain safe, healthy and thriving communities. Shows run May through October, in neighborhoods from the beach to the desert, and everything in between. Each movie event gives residents a reason to visit their local parks after dark, deterring inappropriate loitering and park use, and bringing additional safety and security to residents’ favorite locales. Events begin as early as 5 p.m., though actual movie start times are 15 minutes after sunset. Before the movie, many locations provide additional entertainment like arts and crafts, games, costume contests, music, dancing and food trucks. FAQ: What should I bring? Plan to bring chairs or blankets for your comfort. Chairs are not provided at any of our events. Also, feel free to pack a picnic and enjoy your meal under the stars! Some locations will have food available, so check the Event Specifics section of each location and date for more details. Bring a sweater or light jacket – it will cool down once the sun sets. What if it rains? In the event of rain or high winds a movie may be canceled. If it rains on the day of the movie you’re planning to attend, please contact the Parks & Recreation office to get up-to-date information on possible cancellations. Contact information for each location is in the Event Specifics section of each scheduled movie. Can I bring my dog? Many parks allow dogs as long as they remain on leash. Rules are typically listed on community boards or kiosk signs – but you may also call to confirm. Always keep a close eye and clean up after your pet. Where can I park? Most locations have ample parking or quick access to public transportation. We encourage you to check the Event Specifics section of the movie you plan to attend to see if there are any specific notes on parking.
