  • Event Details: Join the Library for the 2022 Summer Festival Jazz Concerts. Sponsored by the Friends of the Coronado Library and Hotel Del Coronado, concerts will take place every other Friday from June 3-August 26. Doors will open 15 minutes prior to each performance. On Friday, July 29, the Uptown Rhythm Makers will showcase their unique style of authentic New Orleans style traditional jazz. A staple of the San Diego music scene since 2003, they've performed at the California Center for the Arts and the San Diego Jazz Fest . This concert will show off their range and feature favorites from traditional jazz hits and songs written especially for jazz bands in the 1920’s and 1930’s. If you listen closely, you’ll recognize tunes from King Oliver, Jelly Roll Morton, Louis Armstrong, Isham Jones, Duke Ellington, Spencer Williams, and more. Performer Bios: Bruce Vermazen: cornet & vocals: Bruce is a retired Cal - Berkeley professor and jazz cornetist since his teens. He is also a published jazz historian and has led jazz and ragtime orchestras in San Diego and the Bay Area. Bob Andersen: trombone & leader: Bob works part-time as a home health Occupational Therapist and leads the Uptown Rhythm Makers. He was a member of the seminal post-Katrina New Orleans trad jazz revival band, the Loose Marbles. Jim Fiedler: clarinet: Jim is a retired Navy veteran and a professional jazz clarinetist since high school in the late 60s. Armand Frigon: guitar: Armand is a former college music professor and professional jazz guitarist since the 70s. Jeremy Eikam: string bass: Jeremy is a high school music teacher and band director, and an in demand bassist around San Diego. Ray Conseur: drums: Ray teaches part-time with the San Diego USD and has been a professional drummer since the 70s.

  • Oktoberfest Is Back In Encinitas Sept. 25, 2022 With German Food, Beer, Music And Festivities! The Encinitas Chamber of Commerce announces their 2022 Oktoberfest is back in-person from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 25, 2022. Now in its 26th year, this free family-oriented event is open to the public and celebrates German roots and culture in the local area. Live entertainment including Bavarian music and dance troupes, German food, international refreshments, two beer gardens and a diverse selection of local artisan products will be featured. A ceremonial parade is slated for noon. More than 15,000 guests are expected to attend. Highlights include a family fun zone, carnival rides, games and a street craft fair with more than 175 local vendors. Food and refreshment tents will serve authentic German beer and food. The "Keepin' It Local Craft Beer Garden" celebrates San Diego's thriving craft beer scene and features local breweries Duck Foot Brewing, Eppig Brewing, Firestone Walker Brewing Company, Hangar 24, and Helia Brewing Co. For the first time, hard kombucha from Local Roots and hard cider from Bivouac Ciderworks will be offered. The Family Tent will exclusively serve beer from sponsor Burgeon Beer Co. Live entertainment, sponsored by Ting Internet, will include Bavarian music from the Bavarian Beer Garden Band. Dance troupes from The Gemutlichkeit Alpine Dancers and the Encinitas Ballet will perform. Bach to Rock Encinitas will DJ the music at the Craft Beer Tent. The German roots of Encinitas go back to the northeastern colony of Olivenhain, which was founded by German farmers in 1884. The Encinitas Oktoberfest coincides with Germany's start of Oktoberfest in mid-September.   • Tim Flannery & The Lunatic Fringe Throughout his baseball career, Tim Flannery had his guitar in hand. His uncle, Hal Smith – hero of the 1960 World Series with the Pittsburgh Pirates – was one of Flan’s earliest baseball and musical influences. “He was also a songwriter and carried a Gibson J 35 everywhere. I grew up never knowing you couldn’t do both.” Flan writes songs about his family roots, love, and the surrender that comes when you understand some things are out of your control. He writes about baseball and being on the road, the call of the highway, and the beacon of home. He has an ace band, the Lunatic Fringe, that bring his songs roaring to life in various musical genres like bluegrass, country, and rock. Flan has three World Series Championship rings as a third-base coach with the San Francisco Giants, and he has released 14 albums of original music over the years. He and his wife, Donna, created the Love Harder Project, a 501(c)3 non-profit charitable organization dedicated to anti-bullying and funded by proceeds from his performances and public donations. In 2020, Flannery developed a life-threatening staph infection, but after two of the hardest months of his life was able to recover at home with help from his ever-loving family. Now Tim Flannery is healthy and ready to play shows with his band. He is currently booking shows and writing new songs for his latest album, Waiting On A Miracle which will be released in 2022.
