  • This Independence Day, one of Downtown San Diego's most sought-after rooftop destinations is hosting an all-day celebration in the sky. On Saturday, July 4, Andaz San Diego will partner with Block Party and Happening Times to present a rooftop Fourth of July pool party featuring two stages, surprise musical performances, poolside cabanas, and panoramic views of the city skyline. Running from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m., the 21+ event will culminate with front-row views of San Diego's fireworks display as the city celebrates both Independence Day and America's 250th birthday. Designed as an elevated alternative to traditional holiday festivities, the event invites guests to spend the day enjoying music, cocktails, rooftop vibes, the pool, and one of the best vantage points in Downtown San Diego. Attendees can expect a lineup of secret artists, with additional details to be announced in the coming weeks. Following the rooftop celebration, guests can continue the festivities at the official after-party held inside the hotel, creating a full day-to-night experience in the heart of the city. With limited rooftop capacity and strong demand expected, tickets are anticipated to sell out ahead of the event. Visit: https://posh.vip/e/july-4-presented-by-block-party-x-happening-times? • The premier San Diego art exhibition celebrating the work of Black visual artists and creatives. Part of Kinfolk Fest Juneteenth Week. "ONYX: A Black Artist Exhibition" is a celebration of Black creative expression rooted in San Diego. Curated by Imani Camara, the exhibition brings together Black artists who are from or currently based in the city — painters, musicians, visual artists, and storytellers whose work deserves to be seen, documented, and celebrated on its own terms. The exhibition moves beyond singular narratives. Each work on view reflects a distinct voice, medium, and perspective, while contributing to a larger collective portrait of what Black creativity looks like in San Diego today. "ONYX" creates space for ambiguity, experimentation, and personal storytelling — honoring the full depth of each artist's identity rather than flattening it. The title is intentional. Like the stone, "ONYX" speaks to layered identities and the depth formed through connection. It also references discovery — many of the artists featured were found simply through conversation and community, which raises a question the exhibition sits with: how had they not been seen before? This special exhibition date for "ONYX" is part of Kinfolk Fest Week, San Diego's Juneteenth celebration. The San Diego Black art scene is actively taking shape, and this exhibition is both a reflection of that and an investment in it. By bringing these artists together under one roof, "ONYX" affirms that this creative ecosystem exists. Curated by Imani Camara and curatorial assistant Faith Richardson. Part of Kinfolk Fest Week, June 17–20, 2026. Visit: https://www.sdmelanin.com/events/onyx-x-kinfolk SD Melanin on Instagram and Facebook

  • Join us for a powerful morning of remembrance, nature, and cultural history as WorldBeat Cultural Center hosts the 4th Annual Harriet Tubman Freedom Birdwatch in honor of Juneteenth and the legacy of Black resistance and liberation. This year’s experience will take place in and around WorldBeat Center’s gardens, where participants will engage in guided birdwatching, cultural storytelling, and hands-on learning. In partnership with Celebrate Urban Birds and the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, we’ll be using the Merlin Bird ID app to identify local birds by sight and sound. We’ll also reflect on the important role of birds in history—especially how Harriet Tubman used the call of the barred owl as a secret signal during Underground Railroad missions. Event Highlights: - Guided birdwatching using the Merlin Bird ID app and led by the SoCal Bird Nerds and San Diego Bird Alliance - Stories of how the barred owl and other birds were used as coded signals - Native habitat restoration with native planting African Peace Drum Circle - Juneteenth Freedom Soul Food Plate This is more than a birdwatch—it’s a celebration of heritage, resilience, and the deep connection between nature and liberation. Free and open to the public. All ages welcome. Let’s learn, honor, and walk in the path of freedom—together.
