Boris Eifman’s "Pygmalion Effect" reveals the celebrated choreographer at his most psychologically sharp, fusing virtuosic classical technique with visceral emotional power. Inspired by George Bernard Shaw’s "Pygmalion," this production reimagines the story as a dark, modern ballet about artistic control and human transformation. Eifman’s distinctive movement language captures the volatile bond between a brilliant, domineering creator and the young woman he reshapes, exposing desire, manipulation, and vulnerability beneath the polish. Dramatically charged and emotionally rich, the ballet exemplifies Eifman’s gift for turning narrative dance into gripping psychological theater. After working for 10 years at the Vaganova Academy of Russian Ballet, in 1977, he formed his own ballet ensemble, interweaving classical ballet, modern dance and ecstatic impulses to create a completely different form of choreography where self-expression becomes the subject and in which there is drama, philosophy, characters and a central idea. A distinct feature of Eifman’s theater, its trademark, is that almost all of his performances have a plot and, often, a literary source. In this way he can plunge into a realm that is familiar, all the while discovering and revealing the unexplored. His unique lexicon and conceptual, authorial interpretations are a breakthrough into that fantastic dimension where the boundlessness of inner worlds comes to life.

What is a Dirty Cello? Find out at New Village Arts in Carlsbad on April 18. The band Dirty Cello is a globe trotting band that performs blues, rock and Americana, all fronted by virtuoso cellist Rebecca Roudman. A classically trained symphony player, Roudman dropped the straight- jacket of classical music years ago and hasn’t looked back since. “We travel all over the place,” says Roudman, “and everywhere we go, the idea is to put on a high energy show. We’re a rock band, but with a cello instead of a lead guitar.” The Dirty Cello band really does get around - with shows from Iceland, to China, to a Santa Cruz nudist resort. The band will be performing for the first time at the New Village Arts in Carlsbad on April 18 for a special afternoon show. Among their many descriptions, Oakland Magazine describes the group as, "Dirty Cello’s music is all over the map: funky, carnival, romantic, sexy, tangled, electric, fiercely rhythmic, and textured, and only occasionally classical." Roudman agrees with this description and adds, “We’re all about the fun at our shows and we step on stage with only a vague plan as to what specific songs we are going to play, and we react to what the audience wants to hear and adjust accordingly.” With a set list ranging from Jimi Hendrix to Charlie Daniels to rocking original songs, the band can deliver on this promise.
