"Beyond the Border, en Plein Air" takes visitors on a visual journey starting from the public parks, regional and national parks, into neighborhoods, past historical sites of architectural marvel, along the bay, and the serene Pacific shoreline. The journey concludes with a tranquil finale at the dock, leaving a lasting impression of the journey's diverse landscapes. This journey, much like the artistic process, is a transformative one where each step reveals new perspectives and insights. The exhibition offers a space where plein air artists share their unique interpretations of the world around them. Each painting is the artist's experience, inviting viewers to pause and reflect. The time and consideration given by each artist enriches the public's understanding of the artistic journey, making the exhibition a shared experience of discovery and appreciation. Jazz at the Athenaeum's summer series opens Wednesday, June 19, with a special celebration of Juneteenth featuring Brian Blade & The Fellowship Band (note two separate shows at 6 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.). One of the world’s leading jazz drummers, Blade brings Jon Cowherd on piano, Melvin Butler on tenor and soprano saxophone, Myron Walden on alto saxophone and bass clarinet, and Roland Guerin on bass to the Athenaeum for their first local appearance. Register today for this rare opportunity to learn the ancient art of navigation from coastwise through celestial as the discipline unfolded through centuries of exploration, trade, naval warfare, and scientific advances. The combination of technical instruction and historical narrative makes this the only navigation course of its kind. It has been taught for several years in Universities and at the Maritime Museum by Capt. Ray Ashley, PhD, KCI, President and CEO, Maritime Museum of San Diego and navigator, bark Star of India. The comprehensive 10- week course will be held at the Maritime Museum Wednesday evenings from 6:00-8:00 PM, beginning July 10 and running through September 11. The course will also include a day of navigating at sea in either the Museum’s 19th-century replica tops’l schooner Californian or the replica 16th-century galleon San Salvador. "The Truth About Reading" looks at the illiteracy problem in America, highlighting people who learned to read as adults, and sharing proposed solutions for working towards a future where every child learns to read proficiently.
