About Carter Key Carter Key is a trombonist, pianist, vocalist, educator, composer, and arranger. Originally from Richmond, VA., in 2015 Carter moved to Miami, FL to pursue Jazz Studies at the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music. While attending UM, Carter played lead trombone in the prestigious Frost Concert Jazz Band and served as a mentor for younger musicians in the jazz program. Since then, he has worked as a top call musician in South Florida for jazz orchestras, and recordings, particularly for groups such as South Florida Jazz Orchestra and Libido Band. Carter was featured on trombone on the Grammy Award Winning big band album “The Omni-American Book Club” by Brian Lynch. Carter has performed alongside musicians such as Gloria Estefan, Ziggy Marley, Damian Marley, Haley Reinhart, Brett Eldridge, John Daversa, Farruko, Stephen Marley, Gilbert Castellanos, and Arturo Sandoval among others. About Justin & Melonie Grinnell Melonie Grinnell is an active as an educator and performer. She began studying piano at an early age and has since been recognized for her skills as a pianist, and her abilities as a vocalist, music educator, and musical director. Melonie received her Bachelors of Music degree in Music Education with jazz emphasis from the University of Miami and a Masters of Music performance degree in Jazz Studies from San Diego State University. Additionally, she is on the faculty for the Francis Parker/KSDS 88.3 Summer Jazz Workshop where she teaches jazz piano and co-directs middle school to high school student ensembles. She is also active as an adjudicator for instrumental jazz festivals including the Coronado/COSA Jazz Festival and the KSDS Jazz 88/CMEA festival. Justin Grinnell is a San Diego-based freelance jazz bassist and music educator. More importantly, he is a husband to pianist/educator Melonie Grinnell and father to their two sons. In addition to performing, Justin maintains an active teaching schedule as adjunct faculty at University of San Diego and Grossmont College, and as faculty for the Francis Parker Annual Summer Jazz Workshop. He has also served as an adjudicator and clinician at local music festivals, such as the Coronado Jazz Festival and the San Diego Bass Fest. Justin received his Bachelor's and Master's Degrees in Jazz Performance from San Diego State University while studying with bassists Gunnar Biggs and Bert Turetzky. Justin also achieved ABD (all but dissertation) status for a doctoral degree in Jazz Studies at the University of Southern California. Besides studying privately with Los Angeles' first-call jazz bassist, Darek Oles, Justin's enrollment at USC gave him the opportunity to study with internationally-recognized jazz artists Peter Erskine, Russ Ferrante, Bob Mintzer, and Alan Pasqua. Known world wide as The Queen of Boogie Woogie, The Sultana of Swing, and The Lady Who Skates on the 88s, Sue Palmer has been a presence on the live music scene in San Diego and the world for over 30 years. She was inducted into the San Diego Music Hall of Fame in 2018, has had a day named after her by the city of San Diego in 2008, and has won numerous San Diego Music Awards for her bands and albums. She has recorded over 12 albums under her own name, securing an international award from The International Blues Challenge (IBC) in Memphis for Best Self Produced Album (Sophisticated Ladies). She was the beehive wearing music director and longtime pianist for blues diva Candye Kane, through the 90s, appearing on many of her albums, touring world wide (France, Germany, England, The Czech Republic, Turkey, South Africa, Australia, and more) as well as all over the US and parts of Canada. Sue has also toured Switzerland, Russia, The Netherlands, and Argentina under her own name. She had a radio show for 3 years on San Diego's local Jazz station KSDS 88.3FM, and now hosts a podcast called "The Motel Swing Happy Hour KSUE San Diego." Culinary Historians of San Diego will present “Inventing the Flying Meal - The Early Days of Food in Flight,” featuring Richard Foss, at 10:30 am May 18, in the Neil Morgan Auditorium of the San Diego Central Library, 330 Park Blvd, San Diego. Aircraft present the most challenging cooking environment that has ever existed, but cooks and engineers rose to the challenge. Zeppelins, flying boats, and some airliners featured meats roasted inflight and sauces made from scratch. Some strange things were tried, including cooking with charcoal, alcohol stoves, and the heat of the engines. Refrigeration was another problem, and even trays with precooked meals present challenges in transport and storage. After this lecture, you’ll marvel that any meal can be created in flight, much less a good one. Richard Foss has been writing professionally since 1986 when he started reviewing restaurants for a Los Angeles newspaper. He has contributed to over forty different publications, including the Encyclopedia of World Food Cultures and the Oxford Companion to Sweets. Richard has taught culinary history in extension programs, done lecture tours in the US, Australia, and New Zealand, been a culinary consultant for museums, and is on the board of Culinary Historians of Southern California. His book on the history of rum was published in 2012. “Food in the Air and Space” was released in December 2014. It wasn’t until after Silvio’s death that Mark found an archive of old photos, letters, and documents detailing Silvio’s journey as a Prisoner of War in World War II.
