The City of Carlsbad is bringing back the past at the Hot Rods & Cool Treats carnival and classic car show. Grab the family and come on out for some good old-fashioned fun. It’s an old-fashioned carnival at Pine Avenue Park with activities for the young and young at heart. Test your game skills in Can-Knock-Down, Ring Toss, Frog Hopper, and more. Enjoy crafts, face painting, and a Fun Zone. Build your own sundae at the ice cream bar and vote on your favorite car in the classic car show. Enjoy live music covering decades of sounds. Carnival tickets, food, and drinks are available for purchase at the event.

About the exhibition: Unconscious Research features paintings and sculpture in which Takal explores exterior and interior expressions of the self. Predominantly working with oil on canvas, the paintings represent a shift in her work as she fully embraces the elemental language of abstraction, while her sculptural works showcase a collection of more linear and legible subjects. A Rolodex piece will be included in homage to the Athenaeum’s card catalogs, inviting visitors to peruse lists of personal feelings, collected from Takal’s friends and colleagues over the COVID-19 pandemic. Takal’s interests in the dissonance between our inner and outer consciousnesses and our human attempts to organize ourselves within that space are highlighted in this showcase of collective emotions and the inner workings of her artistic practice. About the artist: Marisa Takal (b. 1991, Montclair, New Jersey) received a BFA from San Francisco Art Institute in 2013. She has shown in numerous solo, duo, and group shows at Night Gallery, Los Angeles; Marianne Boesky Gallery, New York; White Columns, New York; Page Gallery, New York; Del Vaz Projects, Santa Monica; Bolsky Gallery, Otis College of Art and Design, Los Angeles; Dr. Bernard Heller Museum, New York; Nicodim Gallery, New York; Fall River Museum of Contemporary Art, Fall River; Jeffrey Stark, New York; and Loyal Gallery, Stockholm. In 2016, she was named the recipient of the Rema Hort Mann Foundation Emerging Artist Award and the Stanley Hollander Award. This is the artist’s first exhibition in San Diego. Springtime in Carlsbad brings a burst of color and creativity with the highly anticipated Art & Wine Walk happening on Saturday, April 13 from 3 to 6 p.m at The Forum Carlsbad, an outdoor lifestyle shopping center operated by Northwood Retail. This beloved annual event promises a delightful fusion of art, wine and community spirit amidst the picturesque backdrop of this charming coastal town. The Art & Wine Walk is a free event that will feature an array of artistic expressions, including paintings, ceramics, photography and more. Guests are invited to explore the center to view artwork from visiting and local artists in participating shops and restaurants. Attendees are also invited to stop by the Wine Garden near YETI for a special wine tasting presented by Jimbo’s, custom charcuterie cones from Mirabelle Charcuterie, and live acoustic music by the talented Christian Jules Taylor The Wine Garden presented by Jimbo’s will offer attendees an opportunity to taste a variety of fine wines from around the world along locally brewed non-alcoholic beer. Guests must be 21 years old to enter the Wine Garden. Representatives from Yering Station will serve Little Yering Chardonnay, a bright and vibrant selection with classic citrus notes of lemon and pink grapefruit, as well as the Little Yering Pinot Noir, which finishes with briary spice and ripe cherry fruit. Representatives from Zephyr will serve a Sauvignon Blanc, which expresses the ethereal, aromatic and structural flair of the Dillions Point Sub-Region in Marlborough, New Zealand. Massanois will serve Club 44 Mediterranee Rose, inspired by the French Riviera, with refreshing hints of summer strawberry, raspberry and juicy watermelon. For guests craving a different selection of spirits, Melograno will provide samples of premium cocktails such as the Orange Blossom Martini, Melon Margarita, and Pomegranate Cosmopolitan. RationAle Brewing will also be on site to provide samples of non-alcoholic craft beer. Donations will be accepted at the event on behalf of The Flower Fields Foundation. The Foundation is dedicated to offering educational and enrichment programs for kids in schools, scouts and charter/academy programs. Participating Tenants and Artists: YogaSix will offer a complimentary Flow Yoga class in the breezeway at 2 p.m. ADORE Gallery will spotlight a variety of artwork by several featured artists. A variety of artwork will also be strategically positioned throughout the center: Angela Palacios' (AP Color Paintings) love for nature is the guiding principle in the works from the Colombian artist whose home studios are located in Encinitas and Oahu. She considers both a source of inspiration and paradise. AP explores the theme of colorful beauty in nature through vivid contrasts and intends to bring joy and life to the viewer. Gather Wild is a women-owned brand that sells creative handcrafted home goods inspired by nature. Through foraging along beaches and trails nature treasures are collected, pressed, and preserved to be artistically arranged in jewelry and home decor. Inger Taylor is a contemporary abstract artist whose work is intended to evoke emotion. Every painting is an organic process that starts with a rough idea that takes on its own shape and feel. Leticia Demeuse is a Brazilian fine artist living in California. Her abstract paintings elevate the energy and beauty of your home. Jared Weintraub is a fine art outdoor photographer with work representative of his love for the earth’s elements and natural formations. Jared’s pieces encompass ocean, alpine, and astrologically-infused star-filled skies, punctuated with unique lighting techniques. Additional tenants and artists will be announced. Point Loma’s Liberty Station is proud to host its newest community event, Anchored in Wellness: A Day of Mindfulness and Movement at Liberty Station. The daylong celebration will take place on Saturday, June 29 from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. in Liberty Station's Ingram Plaza. The outdoor wellness festival will feature two stages, individually dedicated to movement or mindfulness, to offer everything from a good sweat to grounding meditation. Anchored in Wellness will feature experiential activations from leading San Diego's fitness and wellness experts, including yoga classes instructed by CorePower and YogaSix, Pilates class instructed by Point Loma Club Pilates, yin sound bath and meditation guided by Riff Yoga, bootcamp HIIT class led by Fit Athletic Club, cold plunges and breathwork led by Soul Plunge, pop up pickleball hosted by VOLO and more. It's a nationally recognized and a growing collection of authentic, bold, powerful and poignant stories, written and performed by South Asian women. YKB has evolved into a life of its own, nurturing a unique space of love, trust and sharing, while simultaneously building community among local South Asian women. Each year the YKB narratives shatters the silence around subjects like domestic violence, single motherhood, self identity, sexual abuse and much more with the South Asian socio-cultural context, whether in native lands or in adopted homelands. The powerful monologues are captivating in their intensity, their raw messages questioning societal norms, judgments and prejudices. Hear their story! "MenOlogues" Act II - A ground-breaking launch at the 2017 Ahaana Festival, was received with amazing support and appreciation! "MenOlogues" (men performing monologues...get it???) was conceived and created by the founder & director of Ahaana. Her vision of introducing men and their stories to the monologue type of writing and performing, in the same style as YKB, but with a more casual and comfortable approach. Why create the space for men? Well, men should also be able to emote about their poignant experiences!
