  • Forever Balboa Park offers thematic park tours that focus on the park’s unique biodiversity and highlight the park’s horticultural wonders on the second Saturday of each month. Led by park volunteer and horticultural enthusiast Bill Edwards, the free tours leave from the Visitors Center at 9:30 a.m. unless otherwise indicated. Walks last 1.5 to 2 hours and are typically less than 1 mile on level terrain. April 13 Tour: Kate Sessions and Balboa Park, Part 1 (Tour begins at Kate Session Statue on West Mesa) Named the “Mother of Balboa Park,” Kate Sessions had a major impact on the flora of San Diego at the turn of the century and continues to influence the plants seen today. This walk explores one of her “hidden gardens” from when she had a nursery/experimental demonstration garden in Balboa Park. Along the way her remarkable accomplishments in shaping the landscape with plants brought from around the world will be discussed. A citizen scientist, entrepreneur, and horticulturalist, Sessions devoted her life to learning and disseminating knowledge. Meet at the Kate Sessions Statue located one block east of 6th and Laurel Street.
  • Theme: Heartfulness Concepts and Practices Talk Topics: the art of lovingkindness and compassion, exploring our inner emotional landscape, responding to life circumstances versus reacting from fear, working with pain This six-week class will provide an introduction to mindfulness meditation as a practice that offers an opportunity to experience the mind as free from reactivity. Such freedom produces a well balanced mind. The goal of the class is to teach you how to be mindful of the present moment so as to live a full and fulfilling life.   • FREE writing workshops are open to writers with any experience level and working in any genre. We’ll look to Nature to guide our process and be inspired by ideas from Ross Gay’s Inciting Joy and adrienne maree brown’s Emergent Strategy. We’ll set goals, share supportive feedback, and build a sustainable writing practice through autonomy and accountability as we build community. Bring your laptop, journal, or other favorite writing tools (pens and paper will be provided). Come for each class or drop in as you are able. We’ll celebrate our work in a public reading.   • Second Tuesday Explorations is a monthly gathering of creative writers that fosters support, inspiration, and community. Second Tuesday is a generative meeting. New topics for each session will challenge writers to explore and expand their craft. Generative writing prompts will encourage you to grow and learn in exciting new ways. The first hour will be spent introducing the prompt followed by a sustained ‘free-write’ period. During the second hour, writers will be invited to share their writing with the group.
