  • The president made the remark to reporters amidst back-and-forth developments in federal court, including an allegation that a forklift repeatedly struck the center.
  • South Central LA, the early 1980s. Pierce Mundy (Everett Silas) is always on the move without ever really getting anywhere – kept busy by his parents, their dry cleaning shop, friends and neighbors. His childhood buddies are all in prison or dead and his best friend Soldier (Ronnie Bell) is just getting out of jail. Pierce’s brother Wendell (Monte Easter), on the other hand, is an up-and-coming lawyer set to marry an upper-middle-class woman (Gaye Shannon-Burnett). Pierce is entirely lacking in ambition, to the consternation of his Bible-thumping mother (Jessie Holmes), and yet he is an integral part of life in the neighborhood. When Soldier is killed in a car accident, Pierce’s conflicting obligations to family and friends manifest in the choice between his brother’s wedding and his best friend’s funeral, both falling on the same day. Charles Burnett’s second feature after "Killer of Sheep" is a tragicomic classic of New Black Cinema in which lived realities are shown in even the smallest of supporting roles, complex and attentive. Pierce’s wanderings reveal a portrait of a young man and a community defined in equal measure by stagnation, resignation, resistance and joie de vivre. Digital Gym Cinema on Facebook / Instagram

  • Monday, June 15 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Hosted by Verbatim Books This is a free event. No tickets are necessary for entry. Doors open at 6:15 p.m. Join award-winning journalist Jeanne Carstensen for a conversation on immigration and displacement with immigration reporter and Daylight San Diego co-founder Kate Morrissey, moderated by Marco Werman, host of "The World" and journalist-in-residence at UC San Diego. Bringing together global reporting and local expertise, this panel connects the realities of the refugee crisis abroad with the lived experiences of migration at the U.S.–Mexico border. Carstensen’s "A Greek Tragedy" reconstructs a deadly 2015 shipwreck off the coast of Lesvos, while Morrissey’s work documents the complexities of asylum and immigration in the San Diego region. Together, their reporting offers a rare cross-border perspective on how displacement is experienced, governed, and understood. From the Mediterranean to San Diego, the conversation will examine the human stakes behind immigration policy, the structure and limits of asylum systems, and the ethical challenges of documenting trauma and survival. It will also reflect on how migration has evolved over the past decade and what new insights emerge when these crises are considered side by side. Moderated by Werman, the discussion will move between local and global perspectives, offering a thought-provoking look at how migration is reported, debated, and lived in our own community and beyond.
