Join us in the woodshop for this 3-hour scroll saw skills woodworking workshop! In this scroll saw for beginners class, students will learn the basics of getting started in the hobby. A list of the tools and supplies needed will be provided, along with a description of the blade types and samples of items that can be made with them. Students will also cover a brief overview of cutting techniques, and tips for success at home. We will then go through four hands-on exercises, to help build your skill set and become comfortable using a scroll saw. You will practice cutting curves, sharp turns and straight lines. Afterwards we progress through the steps and learn new techniques alongthe way. You will leave with the items you make throughout the day. Pictured is the final exercise which uses all of the previous skills practiced earlier to complete it. Materials are provided. We recommend students bring their own eye protection, ear protection & apron, but we have some for borrow if needed. Aprons for sale here. No experience necessary. Director of San Diego State University’s longest-running Interdisciplinary and Cultural Studies graduate program, MALAS (the Master of Arts in Liberal Arts and Sciences program), Dr. William Nericcio is Professor of English and Comparative Literature at SDSU. Dr. Nericcio will lead the audience through an engaging exploration spanning the writing of Carlos Fuentes and Jean-Paul Sartre and including works presently on view at The San Diego Museum of Art, considering what it means to be “sin poder mirar,” or to exist without the power to see. Wednesday evenings, January 7, 14, 21, 28, February 11, with the last class of the series ending a half hour later Learn the fascinating and ancient art form of ceramics with Meg, a full time potter, in this 5-week, weekday evening wheel series. Whether you’re a beginner or intending to deepen your relationship, all are welcome to experience the world of clay in this fun and friendly environment. By focusing on techniques to confidently create functional and aesthetic pottery, we will learn creative design, how to throw on the wheel, trimming and glazing! Projects will be ready to pick up 3-4 weeks after the last class. Beginners welcome.
