Based in San Diego, rock-reggae band Tribal Seeds come at their music from a different angle, more influenced by bands like Steel Pulse and Aswad than the common touchstone of Sublime. Formed in 2005 by the Jacobo brothers, singer Steven and producer Tony-Ray, the group issued its debut album, Youth Rebellion, that same year. Since forming, they have gained many fans through their refreshing take on rock influenced reggae, focusing more on roots and rocksteady influences to inform their sound, looking back to artists like Black Uhuru, The Congos, Peter Tosh and the Abyssnians. The annual San Diego St. Patrick's Day Parade and Festival in San Diego, California, lives up to its reputation as being the largest Irish celebration west of the Mississippi. The event’s main attraction is the parade, which features over 120 floats complete with marching bands, bagpipers, traditional Irish dance troupes, police and fire departments, clowns and dignitaries. The festival portion boasts two stages of live music, a beer garden and a ride-filled kids' zone. After two years of no parade we are back! From the organizers: Memphis-bred, Grammy-nominated bassist/composer Stephan Crump is an active bandleader with fifteen critically-acclaimed album releases and numerous film scoring contributions. An exercise in profound vulnerability, Stephan’s solo performance explores his unique musical language through an expansive range of sonorities on the acoustic bass. It is a culmination of decades of work as a bassist, composer, and improviser. From his home studio in Brooklyn, Crump released monthly solo recordings from 2020 into 2021 for a fan-supported series via his Bandcamp page. The new album, "Rocket Love", is curated from this body of work. Known for transforming his instrument into a speaking entity of magnetic pull, Crump's focus on creative instrumental music has led to collaborations with many of the leading lights of his generation, most notably Vijay Iyer, in whose trio and sextet he played a dynamic, founding role. Stephan can also be heard as long-standing member of Jen Chapin Trio, Ches Smith Trio, Rez Abbasi Acoustic Quartet, Liberty Ellman Sextet, Secret Keeper (duo with Mary Halvorson), his own Rosetta Trio (with Jamie Fox, Liberty Ellman), his Rhombal quartet (with Ellery Eskelin, Adam O’Farrill, Tyshawn Sorey), Borderlands Trio (with Kris Davis, Eric McPherson) as well as co-led ensembles with Ingrid Laubrock, Cory Smythe, Mat Maneri, and Okkyung Lee. Alex Arango and his 5-piece band will present a night of original music that explores the rhythms and styles that influenced him. His set will include Colombian cumbias and vallenatos performed on the accordion as well as hip-hop and R&B pieces featuring special guest vocalists. It’s an exciting mix of cultural influences and musical experiences. The San Diego Sound Project is a concert series that highlights emerging groups or artists within the San Diego region. The project is supported by an advisory committee that includes GRAMMY Award winning producer and UCSD faculty member Kamau Kenyatta, CSUSM Professor and Center ARTES Executive Director Dr. Merryl Goldberg, Grossmont College Music Department Chair Derek Cannon, Emmy Award-winning composer and MiraCosta College faculty member Christy Coobatis, and Connections Chamber Music Series Co-Founder Bridget Dolkas. The San Diego Sound Project has been made possible in part by The Conrad Prebys Foundation.
