So you’ve finished writing your novel — what next? What do published novelists do between that raw first draft and the final manuscript to make their plots sizzle and their prose sing? The key lies in reworking your manuscript until your writing jumps off of the page. If you have completed the first draft of a novel, this workshop will help you develop skills to shape your plot for maximum dramatic impact and give life and texture to characters, dialogue, and setting. A new cultural tradition is coming to East County! On Saturday, June 7, 2025, Downtown El Cajon will debut Artivál, East San Diego County’s first-ever arts festival. The free, open-air celebration brings together local creatives, musicians, food and drink vendors, and the community to highlight the city’s cultural identity. Held from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the heart of Downtown El Cajon at Main & Magnolia, the free festival kicks off the summer season with a vibrant showcase of more than 50 artists and makers, interactive installations, live music, and gourmet food trucks. For those 21 and up, East County Arts Association has curated a ticketed Wine & Beer Garden experience that adds an elevated experience with tastings from local wineries, craft brew, and beverage brands. Artivál’s mission is clear – to transform Downtown El Cajon’s public spaces into a living canvas, spark cultural dialogue, and create lasting access to the arts in a part of San Diego that’s long been underserved by creative programming. Featuring a dynamic lineup of visual and performing artists, from rising talents to veteran creatives, Artivál celebrates the full spectrum of local artistry across disciplines and cultures. The Balboa Park Cultural Partnership sent a request to Mayor Todd Gloria and the San Diego City Council asking them to reconsider the new parking fees, which went into effect Jan. 5.

In this six week workshop, students will expand upon what they have learned about the key components of novel writing. The focus of this workshop will be on character development, scene building, narrative structure and the process of writing a first draft. Participants will be encouraged to submit a chapter of their work for peer review. Previous Novel Writing Certificate classes are recommended as a prerequisite.
