In the blockbuster "Barbie" movie, two Latina women save the day, Gloria (played by America Ferrera) and Sasha (played by Ariana Greenblatt), and stand in for Latinas and Latinidad. But in 2000, "Dora the Explorer" was considered by many to be pathbreaking: for the first time, a Latina girl was a main character on Nickelodeon. Notably, this year was also the first time that the U.S. Census revealed that the Latine population was the most numerous minority in the country. Valdivia’s talk will consider how this evolution brought the girl culture of Latinas and Latindad and to the center of representation and profit in U.S. popular culture. Sparks Gallery is pleased to show new work by bi-coastal artist Monty Montgomery in his solo exhibition, “Intersection”. Profoundly affected by his upbringing in the rural woods of Virginia’s countryside, Monty Montgomery’s work has always been informed by his visceral and emotional reactions to everyday experiences, such as exploring nature, or trekking city streets. His distinctive artistic voice was shaped in his teen years, when he began expressing his perception of the external world in bright geometric abstraction. His characteristic style emerged as a result of distilling sensory input through the lens of urban and natural landscapes. Using color theory, mathematics, and intuition, he attempts to harmonize the collision of these elements into something beautiful and cohesive. Montgomery uses his innate intuition for color and object relationships to connect with the viewer, sharing his artistic vision through a “visual-emotional language”, as he calls it. His interpretation of everyday scenes is often surprising, as the end results look vastly different than their real world counterparts. Celebrate a day of arts and cultural diversity in City Heights, a vibrant San Diego community. This is a free, family-family event packed with talents and delights in the forms of Fern Street Circus, the Chanh Kien Lion Dancers, interactive drumming and parade with Drummers Without Borders, maskmaking with San Diego Guild of Puppetry, hatmaking with the Mad Hatter, face painting, the San Diego Ballet, Tap in with Claudia Gomez, and Rick and Friends, musicians, a Vietnamese youth dance group, and African drumming. The stage is hopping from 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. Jackie, from Agenda San Diego will emcee. There will be seven food trucks, and booths offering information on services from the community, and more.

Nineteenth-century artists were enamored with polar regions and viewed these extreme locales as unparalleled sources of visual wonder. Freighted with romantic ideas about the sublime and scientific debates about geological time, frozen places factored into the representational interests of many leading American painters like Frederic Edwin Church, whose classic investigation After Icebergs with a Painter (1856) lends this exhibition a title. As part of the Humanities Center’s multiyear inquiry into landscapes and human meaning, "After Icebergs: Conceptual Photography and Climate Crisis" looks at the persistence of creative fascination with ice during an era when glacial melt and accompanying species extinction are urgent concerns. "After Icebergs" will feature photographic works by Mark Dion and Farrah Karapetian, whose photographs suggest the varied approaches to this subject. Dion is a conceptual and installation-based artist whose ongoing project, Ursus Maritimus (begun 1994), documents the often uncanny framing of polar bears in museum dioramas, even as the species itself disappears from its primary habitat. Karapetian is an artist and writer whose series "Slips and Pushes" (2013–2015) deploys melting ice as both a formal element and as a metaphor for, among other things, forced migration due to climate change. Karapetian’s color photograms, cameraless images, are eerily luminous while Dion’s blunt black-and-white documentation prompts questions about the purposes of museum displays. A rare selection of works from "Ursus Maritimus" and "Slips and Pushes" make up the installation at the Humanities Center Gallery.
