From the moment Mercedes Moore takes the stage you can’t look away. She welcomes you to the show, thanks you for coming, and the band rips into its opening chords. As dancers rush to the floor, the smile on Mercedes’ face grows more radiant; you’re in her world and nothing else matters. You might think she was destined to do this, but you’d be wrong. Moore grew up doubting her skills, "I didn’t think that I could sing." She says. “I didn’t think it was possible.” That was then, this is now. Today, fronting her own band, Mercedes works hard to be more than a voice. She wants fans to feel the music, the way she feels the music. Watching faces in the crowd on this night, as Mercedes swings through an extensive playlist of ballads, blues, and soul shakers, it’s obvious she has them right where she wants them. Yet, the most remarkable aspect of this story, the woman has only been singing professionally for a little more than eight years. Eight years. Let there be no doubt, Mercedes Moore is making the most of her time. As a three-time San Diego Music Award nominee, Moore performs regularly with some of Southern California’s premier musicians. About Aimee Jacobs While many classes beneath the arts umbrella caught the mind of Aimee Jacobs, it was melody and song that held her heart. At seven years old, Aimee felt compelled to become a singer, and explained this to her parents. When told it would take hard work, she replied, “I know.” She patiently learned piano for the next five years until she reached a mature enough age to start voice lessons. At age twelve, Aimee was able to begin voice lessons — although she barely got any notes out during the first two sessions. She sensed something inherently vulnerable about the craft, knowing that nobody can really hide how they’re feeling when singing for an audience. Aimee embraced the challenge, and embraced herself as a vessel of expression. In alignment with purpose, she began her journey towards meaning, integrity, and connection with something larger than herself. By 2014, not only did Aimee remain diligent with her lessons, she majored in Opera Performance — studying both classical voice as well as classical piano. She also toured with Burning of Rome, playing music on the stage with acts such as Bad Religion, Offspring, Cage the Elephant, The Psychedelic Furs, The Dirty Heads, and Moving Units. Juggling so many responsibilities all at once, Aimee discovered that apart from performance itself, the community surrounding music was fire to her soul. Over the course of shows — and years of teaching students both piano and voice — Aimee continually validated a revelation that music is the history of feelings. She believes that not even words can achieve the same level of communication or impact. To this end, she found much fulfillment in coaching and teaching. What greater gift can be given to a person than a way of channeling their spirit and expressing parts of themselves for which they have no words? For her own endeavors of expression, Aimee recorded her first album of folk pop songs by the age of sixteen. She graduated high school early and dove right into collaborating with Burning of Rome. She continued creating her own music while majoring in Opera Performance. While recording original works at San Diego’s Singing Serpent, she found herself becoming a musician for hire. As community took further shape, she found herself forming a new project with skilled collaborators: Belladon. An idea soon evolved into a notable band. Be it students, fellow musicians, or an audience, Aimee aspires to ensure people feel warm and welcome. Where there are no words that can be said, music can take the lead. Where there are too many feelings to comprehend, music is a place to land. And where the horizon is darkest, music can see far beyond it. The Garners is a modern vintage duo/trio that embraces gypsy jazz, 1920s and '30s jazz, blues, and folk. They are writers of music as well, and you will find that the inspiration behind their originals comes from these classic eras/genres. Raggedly sophisticated, The Garner’s mysterious sweetness will entrance even the most immovable listener. With Lorelei on Tenor Ukulele, Jon on Gypsy Guitar, and both singing from the deep wells of our booming hearts, our music will transport you back when times were harder, yet the good times, more colorful, vibrant, and bold. She’s a little bit country, he’s a little bit rock ‘n’ roll… well, sort of. Lorelei, vocals and ukulele, is a classically trained vocalist that has fallen in love with swing jazz and Americana. Jon, vocals and guitar, is a certified jazz nerd having fallen in love with Billie Holiday, Lester Young, and Charlie Christian at the age of 16. He also has a soft spot for roots music, especially Sonny Terry and Brownie Mcghee. They decided to make it easier to split the check and got married in October 2015. Their whole life is music. About Justin & Melonie Grinnell MELONIE GRINNELL is an active as an educator and performer. She began studying piano at an early age and has since been recognized for her skills as a pianist, and her abilities as a vocalist, music educator, and musical director. Melonie received her Bachelors of Music degree in Music Education with jazz emphasis from the University of Miami and a Masters of Music performance degree in Jazz Studies from San Diego State University. Additionally, she is on the faculty for the Francis Parker/KSDS 88.3 Summer Jazz Workshop where she teaches jazz piano and co-directs middle school to high school student ensembles. She is also active as an adjudicator for instrumental jazz festivals including the Coronado/COSA Jazz Festival and the KSDS Jazz 88/CMEA festival. JUSTIN GRINNELL is a San Diego-based freelance jazz bassist and music educator. More importantly, he is a husband to pianist/educator Melonie Grinnell and father to their two sons. In addition to performing, Justin maintains an active teaching schedule as adjunct faculty at University of San Diego and Grossmont College, and as faculty for the Francis Parker Annual Summer Jazz Workshop. He has also served as an adjudicator and clinician at local music festivals, such as the Coronado Jazz Festival and the San Diego Bass Fest. Justin received his Bachelor's and Master's Degrees in Jazz Performance from San Diego State University while studying with bassists Gunnar Biggs and Bert Turetzky. Justin also achieved ABD (all but dissertation) status for a doctoral degree in Jazz Studies at the University of Southern California. Besides studying privately with Los Angeles' first-call jazz bassist, Darek Oles, Justin's enrollment at USC gave him the opportunity to study with internationally-recognized jazz artists Peter Erskine, Russ Ferrante, Bob Mintzer, and Alan Pasqua. Sunday Brunch and New Orleans Jazz Trios only at Books & Records Bar! Jon Garner is a gigger, studio musician, and perpetual student. He holds a Bachelor of Music Degree from University of Massachusetts - Amherst, and a Master of Music Degree from San Diego State University. He has performed thousands of gigs all across the United States, but primarily slowly crawls the freeways of Southern California on the way to the next performance. He has performed in every kind of band - from classical to jazz, blue grass to punk. Jon has studied privately with the great guitar masters, Yusef Lateef, Sephane Wrembel, and Gonzalo Bergara, and was lucky enough to glean insights from both Joe Pass and Jim Hall personally. Their wisdom planted the seeds that would become the G Way, use a little to get a lot, simplify. Jon has been teaching for 20 years. Many of his students have become professional musicians themselves, but he teaches beginners and experts alike. He teaches in his private studio, at Palomar College, San Diego School of the Creative and Performing Arts, and online. So far, knock on wood, all of his students have passed their auditions, due to their hard work and Jon's no-nonsense approach to playing guitar. Kaylee Daugherty is an up-and-coming singer in the San Diego jazz scene. With roots in gospel and R&B, her musical interpretations come with soul and passion. She is humbled to play with some of the best musicians around and to have played at a great variety of venues in Southern California, ranging from the lively wineries of Temecula, the intimate coffeeshops of Oak Glen, to the upscale restaurants of Laguna Beach. With a repertoire of upwards 300 songs in English, Spanish, Portuguese and French, and in the styles of swing, blues, bossa nova, boleros and funk, Kaylee has a song for everyone. Whether in a duo, trio, or with the energy of a quartet+, Kaylee can elevate the experience of any space. Kaylee’s favorite part of performing is bringing joy to her audiences through the universal language of music. Her music makes kids dance and gives older folk a sigh of nostalgia.
