  • EDITOR’S NOTE: San Diego District Attorney Summer Stephan is disputing the story KPBS reported on racial disparities in special charges that can lead to life without parole. KPBS’s story relied on a data analysis from a researcher who attributed cases to DAs based on disposition date. The DA’s office provided an analysis that attributed cases to DAs based on filing date. It showed no racial disparity in making these special charges against Black and white defendants when looking only at multiple murder cases during DA Stephan’s tenure. KPBS has clarified the story to include more detail about the analysis and the data it used. Go to the story to learn more. First, in a new KPBS series, we talk with a local mom who shares how she makes ends meet in San Diego County. Then, the second part of a series on Black defendants having a higher likelihood of facing charges that could lead to life without parole than their counterparts. . We also tell you details around California psychiatric hospitals having a new deadline to adjust to new staffing rules. Also, Olympic soccer is coming to San Diego! • Join us for a hands-on morning of reflection, storytelling, and creative making inspired by the photography of Graciela Iturbide. Drawing from her poetic images of landscapes, objects, and communities, this workshop invites participants to explore the relationship between people and the natural world through the creation of organic, nature-inspired books. The program will begin with an educator-led tour of the exhibition, offering close-looking opportunities and conversation to deepen engagement with Iturbide’s work. During this workshop, participants will create one-of-a-kind handmade books using natural materials such as dried leaves, shells, and wood. Guided by museum educators, you will explore simple bookmaking techniques while considering how organic forms, textures, and found elements can hold memory and meaning. Each book will become a tactile archive, an intimate meditation on place, environment, and personal connection. The San Diego Museum of Art on Facebook / Instagram
