With your instructor, Tiffany Heffernan, you’ll learn to make a live succulent-pumpkin centerpiece/arrangement using a real pumpkin, succulents from the farm, and moss. These make a gorgeous centerpiece or add one to your front porch or window for that perfect autumn touch. All materials and supplies are included in your registration. You’ll take home what you make. No experience is necessary, and all ages are welcome. This class is held in person in an intimate setting on Atkinson Plumeria Farm in our open, shaded classroom. It is a rain-or-shine event. The annual Starlight Parade is back for the 61st year on Saturday, December 6. Guests can enjoy the festivities as a variety of floats, marching bands, dance troupes and other community groups hit Third Avenue from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Before the parade starts, attendees can grab something to eat from local vendors at the Holiday Market on Park Way next to Memorial Park or even do some light gift shopping! Make sure to arrive early to see the official tree lighting in the heart of Third Avenue at 5:45 p.m. and enjoy live music ahead of the main event. Attendees are encouraged to bring blankets and low-profile chairs to get a comfortable view of the parade that draws thousands every year! On October 4, Aleck Karis will perform “A French Emotional Journey,” a piano concert in the Joan & Irwin Jacobs Music Room at the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library, which will be followed by a reception. Aleck Karis has performed recitals, chamber music, and concertos across the Americas, Europe, Japan, and China. As the pianist of the new music ensemble Speculum Musicae he has participated in over a hundred premieres and performed at major American and European festivals. His appearances with orchestra have ranged from concertos by Beethoven and Chopin to those of Stravinsky and Carter. His ten solo discs cover repertoire from Mozart to the present, most recently Debussy’s Études and Children’s Corner suite on Bridge, and Beethoven’s sonatas Opus 2, no. 1 and Opus 106 (Hammerklavier), on Roméo. He is a Distinguished Professor Emeritus of the UC San Diego music department. His newest recording is available on Romeo Records, featuring Beethoven’s sonatas Opus 2, no. 1 and Opus 106.
