A book proposal is an equation: a business case married with a marketing plan that you submit to publishers. In this workshop, students will learn the full spectrum of writing a first-draft proposal: what to include, what to leave out, faux pas to avoid, how to structure your proposal in a professional format, and how to demonstrate to publishers that you’re a serious writer who understands the 21st-century publishing landscape. Each week, students will write one draft section of their proposal. They will receive weekly critique on their drafts from the instructor, and they will also workshop sections with one another as partners or in small groups. Learn to Weave Classic Houndstooth! Saturday, June 20, 1-6 p.m. In this 5-hour hands-on workshop, weavers who’ve explored the direct warping (rigid heddle) technique will learn to warp to create a multi-color textile, creating the classic pattern of houndstooth, also known as puppytooth or pinwheel. This class is a great next step for weavers of all skill levels. In class, students will learn best practices for warping their looms with multiple colors. You may borrow a rigid heddle loom to warp on or bring your own (please leave a note in the comments with which loom you will bring to warp, if bringing your own). The remainder of the class will cover learning to weave with more than one color as weft and how to manage and create clean and balanced selvedges. Each student will create their own finished 10-20″ long houndstooth textile to take home. Prerequisite: Students must have taken Warp & Weave on a Rigid Heddle Loom or be comfortable warping a rigid heddle loom using the direct warping method. All materials to warp & weave a houndstooth textile are included for use. If you’re bringing your own rigid heddle loom to warp and weave on, please email Instructor Jeanine Ertl at aninidesigns@gmail.com to let her know which loom you will be bringing. The loom should be all set up and in working order and ready to warp and weave on. No experience necessary. Ages 14+ welcome! OPTION: Students will weave on Ashford looms. Thursday, August 20: Book signing and talk with Amy Forsythe at 5 p.m. Forsythe is an award-winning military photojournalist who served as a U.S. Marine and recently retired from the U.S. Navy Reserve as a Public Affairs Officer. She’s the author of “Heroes Live Here: A Tribute to Camp Pendleton Marines” which started as a passion project to showcase the memorials and markers on Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton which turned into a collaborative work of art that honors our fallen Marines of the post-9/11 generation. Amy Forsythe began her career as an enlisted military journalist in the U.S. Marine Corps and is currently serves as a Public Affairs Officer in the U.S. Navy Reserve. Her career has included five combat deployments and several other overseas assignments.
