Create a unique Bandsaw Box! In this one-day workshop, students will create a bandsaw box with a pivoting lid. Students will leave this workshop with a bandsaw box of their own and the skills to begin creating their own designs. In this class we will cover shop safety and use of the bandsaw, spindle sander, edge sander, drill press, as well as various hand tools. In addition, we will cover the mixed media process of flocking. Students will also learn sanding best practices and how to achieve a perfect finish. We welcome all makers, from beginners to advanced. Woodworking for Women classes are designed to empower women & nonbinary individuals in a supportive and educational woodshop environment which is predominantly a masculine space. We will also introduce machine and hand-sanding as well as methods for finishing your piece. Forever Balboa Park offers thematic park tours that focus on the park’s unique biodiversity and highlight the park’s horticultural wonders on the second Saturday of each month. Led by park volunteer and horticultural enthusiast Bill Edwards, the free tours leave from the Visitors Center at 10:00 a.m. Explore the many trees from around the world that provide the backdrop to “The Jewel of San Diego”—Balboa Park. Many of the tree species have become so popular since being introduced in Balboa Park, they are now found across San Diego and our coastal region. The walking tour will reveal how they got here, why they are so successful, and their historical stories.

Shirley Nash Weber, Ph.D. was nominated to serve as California Secretary of State by Governor Gavin Newsom on December 22, 2020 & sworn into office on January 29, 2021. Weber is California's first Black Secretary of State. What is Community “Environmental Dashboard” (ED) Technology? How can it Foster and Empower Community Engagement, Sustainability and Climate Resilience? Our modern lifestyles have caused most humans to lose connection with the natural world. We are insulated from the consequences of our actions and may not even be aware of how these actions affect the environment. How can we tap into the feedback mechanisms that served us in the past in today’s modern world to foster and empower community engagement, sustainability, and climate resilience? In this talk, we will learn about “Environmental Dashboard” (ED) technology, which is now implemented in several organizations and communities. This exciting technology reconnects people with the natural world by making flows of resources visible and promoting sustainable thought and action. Extensive research demonstrates that exposure to ED content significantly enhances systems thinking and pro-environmental and pro-community social norms and behaviors. Each installation comprises: 1) “Building Dashboard,” which dynamically displays real-time resource consumption in individual buildings to promote resource conservation. 2) “Citywide Dashboard,” which animates whole-community resource flows and environmental conditions. 3) “Community Voices,” which combines images and text to celebrate thought and action that advance social, ecological, and economic dimensions of sustainability. Interactive stories combine content to tell the story of community sustainability and resilience. How might we expand dashboard digital signage throughout organizations and cities to promote a more unified effort to take climate action and encourage pro-environmental and pro-community behaviors?
