The San Diego Early Music Society welcomes another return with mezzo-soprano Lea Desandre and her frequent collaborator, lutenist Thomas Dunford, following their phenomenal first performance in San Diego in 2022 with Jupiter Ensemble. The duo will present an intimate program of works dedicated to love by Italian composers of the seventeenth century. Featuring arias by Monteverdi, Merula, Kapsberger, and Frescobaldi, the program explores the richness and complexity of romantic ardor. Lea Desandre is “one of today’s most exciting voices in early-music performance” (The New York Times) while lutenist Thomas Dunford has been hailed as the “Eric Clapton of the lute” (BBC Magazine). The San Diego Early Music Society is thrilled to welcome back the Belgium-based ensemble Vox Luminis, under the direction of Lionel Meunier, after their sensational San Diego debut in 2019. The ensemble will present a program of four early Bach cantatas: Actus tragicus (BWV 106), Aus der Tiefen rufe ich, Herr, zu dir (BWV 131), Ach Nach dir, Herr, verlanget mich (BWV150), and Weinen, Klagen, Sorgen, Zagen (BWV 12). Specializing in German, Italian, and English repertoire from the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, the group is known for their exquisite and rigorous approach to this repertoire that has made their name “enough in itself to spark a tingle of anticipation” on album releases (Gramophone). “Vox Luminis’s squad of up to 15 voices sing with the utmost sincerity of expression” (David Vickers, Gramophone, 2023).
