For October, our monthly Flower Arranging 101 workshop at Good News takes on a little extra meaning. Join Native Poppy for a special morning of flowers, creativity, and connection in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. We’ll gather at Good News, Hillcrest’s beautifully designed non-alcoholic cocktail lounge and gathering space, to create something beautiful while supporting a cause that touches so many lives. 10% of the proceeds from every ticket to this workshop will be donated to Susan G. Komen, whose mission is to save lives by investing in breakthrough research to prevent and cure breast cancer. In this beginner-friendly workshop, you’ll learn the fundamentals of floral design while creating a lush seasonal arrangement to take home. Working with a thoughtfully curated selection of seasonal and locally grown flowers, we’ll explore flower selection, color harmony, movement, and the mechanics that help arrangements feel natural, balanced, and abundant. After the workshop, enjoy a handcrafted coffee or non-alcoholic cocktail from Good News, included with your ticket. From the Prohibition through the Second Big War, the glory days of Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington are being recaptured humbly and with humor in San Diego by four musicians who know it don’t mean a thing without that swing: Beston Barnett - Guitar, Vocals Pete Miesner - Guitar, Lead Vocals Matt Gill - Clarinet Paul Hormick - Upright Bass The Zzymzzy Quartet takes its name from a hypothetical “last word” in the dictionary: thus, their tagline, “The Last Word in Gypsy Swing.” The “Gypsy” sound is heard in much of the guitar work, heavily influenced by the stylings of French Gypsy jazz legend Django Reinhardt, but the group also pays tribute to the Swing Era with classic standards and idiomatic originals. Since the Zzymzzy Quartet came together in 2004, they’ve played dances, parties, weddings, festivals, art openings, and events throughout Southern California to unanimous enthusiasm, carving out a name for themselves as a tasty dance band and a classy addition to every wedding. In 2017, ART HURTS Records released their second CD, Petite Fleur which, on top of inspired playing and elegant arrangements, features cameos from a variety of beloved San Diego musicians. Art Scene West presents the 3rd Annual San Diego's Finest Art Show, opening at its Seaport Village gallery on Saturday, September 5, from 5–7 p.m. The exhibition is curated by gallery owner Joshua Rios and judged by acclaimed professional artist and San Diego native Christopher Paluso. Six selected artists will receive prestigious ribbons, with cash prizes awarded to the top three placements during the reception. The show features an eclectic mix of styles and subjects, from bold abstract compositions to finely rendered figurative and landscape works, showcasing the range and talent of San Diego's contemporary art scene. The event is free and open to the public, offering a firsthand look at the showcase, the chance to meet participating artists, and the opportunity to purchase original works to bring home. Navigating Culture, Language, & Preforming Arts in Disney's Live Action 'Moana' The release of Disney’s live-action "Moana" film involved local expertise and talent from CSUSM and our surrounding area in San Diego and greater Southern California. Audiences will learn about the making of the film through the perspectives of the Oceanic Cultural Trust, a group created by the film company to serve as cultural consultants on Oceanic language and performing arts. CSUSM faculty Dr. Grant Muagututi’a served as the lead cultural consultant for the film. His work focuses on the need for Oceanic language conservation efforts through mainstream popular media, independent documentary film, community partnership programming, and in higher education institutions both locally and abroad. He, along with others involved in the film, will offer reflections on their specific roles in making the live-action film. Members of the Oceanic Cultural Trust and actors from the film will engage audiences with behind-the-scenes stories and live-action musical and dance performances exclusively for CSUSM to inspire everyone to reimagine how grassroots cultural arts education can shape more inclusive experiences of higher education and impact popular media representations.
