Local experimental choir San Diego New Verbal Workshop will perform “Windchime Meditation” by Zane Alexander S.B., a piece for voices and percussion that will weave itself into the ambient sounds of North Park at sunset. Originally touring public parks across California in 2022, “Windchime Meditation” is a performance concept and musical structure by Zane Alexander S.B. that is designed to activate and engage outdoor spaces. The performance organically adapts to its surrounding environment, and in this iteration it will make use of the variety of public percussion instruments, bells, and xylophones that are permanently installed in the Mini Park. With the help of a handful of percussionists and the voices of San Diego New Verbal Workshop, “Windchime Meditation” invites the listener to get lost in the sounds of nature and the neighborhood, accompanied by the quasi-improvised textures and swirling harmonies of the choir. 2023 SDSU Grad Award Exhibit Marinta Skupin’s paintings and drawings probe our relationship with the natural environment. Among the imagery referenced in her work is that of the San Diego landscape. Skupin combines it with language and scientific data in order to examine how we know the world around us. In addition to being inspired by physical features of the natural world, Skupin’s work is informed by her reflections on the history of landscape painting and on issues such as extinction and the predicted climate apocalypse. The title of the exhibition is a quote from the following passage, written by David Benioff and spoken by Brad Pitt’s character in the 2004 film Troy: “Everything is more beautiful because we're doomed. You will never be lovelier than you are now. We will never be here again.” This is Skupin’s first solo exhibition and is the result of a partnership between Art Produce and San Diego State University, through which Art Produce makes an annual award to one student in the University’s School of Art & Design for an exhibition. Her work has been exhibited at such venues as the Athenaeum in La Jolla, the Institute of Contemporary Art in San Diego, Gallery 825 in Los Angeles, and the Abercrombie Gallery at McNeese State University in Louisiana. The Youth4Climate Fall 2023 Summit is for high school and college students interested in honing their skills as an activist of any kind! Participants will also attend multiple engaging workshops and activities aimed at fueling collaborative efforts to envision a climate-friendly future, build local movements and combat eco-anxiety in a nourishing and positive way. Adults – especially teachers – are also welcome to attend to learn how they can support youth in creating waves of change. Experienced and budding activists are welcome!
