  • Exhibit runs March 23 - April 25. The photo-based and sculptural works in the exhibition examine the history of urban development in Southern California. Working in Los Angeles, Jackie Castillo investigates the relationships between city infrastructure, collective memory and the isolation and anxiety felt by the working class. She documents architectural remnants that reveal the ways that place, labor, memories, and identity become fractured over time. Mónica Arreola approaches similar concerns from the perspective of her hometown, Tijuana. Trained as an architect, she photographs urban developments abandoned mid-construction, revealing the effects of the 2008 United States housing market crash and the financial crisis that reverberated across the border. We invite you to view this exhibition and join us for a reception on Wednesday, March 25, 4 – 7 p.m. Meet the artists and enjoy refreshments. San Diego Mesa College Gallery on Facebook / Instagram
  • A playful writing lab on creative risk and imaginative confidence. In this two-hour class, we’ll treat the impossible as completely ordinary. Through brief writing bursts and short “popcorn” readings, you’ll practice committing to strange premises without explaining or apologizing for them. You’ll describe irrational events in calm tones, place mundane tasks inside tilted realities, and let objects take control of the story. The focus isn’t randomness—it’s conviction. Come ready to sound completely confident about something that makes no sense. San Diego Writers, Ink on Facebook / Instagram
  • Lecture title: Advancing the vision: An experiment in rethinking the nonprofit biomedical research model- Front Row lecture with Pete Schultz, PhD Description: In his Front Row lecture, President and CEO Peter Schultz will highlight the progress Scripps Research has made in pioneering a new model for non-profit biomedical research. He will describe how integrating basic science and translational research under one roof is accelerating next-generation medicines—from new immunotherapies for cancer and innovative medicines for infectious disease to regenerative treatments for heart, lung, and intestinal tissues. At a time of uncertainty in federal science funding, this model is not only advancing human health but also helping to generate sustainable support for innovative scientific research and for training the next generation of scientific leaders. ABOUT SCRIPPS RESEARCH Scripps Research is an independent, nonprofit biomedical institute based in La Jolla, California, and ranked one of the most influential in the world for its impact on innovation. The Front Row lecture series, now in its ninth season, offers an exclusive glimpse into groundbreaking scientific discoveries in action. Join us—in the front row. Reserve your seat!
