Weeks of altars, workshops, film, food, and a candlelight procession — the Day of the Dead as Sherman Heights has kept it since 1994. Season: October 15 – November 2, 2026 Where: 2258 Island AvenueSan Diego, CA 92102 About: The Día de los Muertos celebration at the Sherman Heights Community Center is a weeks-long community festivity that preserves the Day of the Dead tradition, itself a millennial practice. It began in 1994, when Sr. Domingo Sandoval, a local resident, approached the Center asking for a space to build an altar in honor of his loved ones. Over the years the festivity has grown to include onsite community altars, front-yard altars throughout the neighborhood, craft workshops, online tutorials and videos, student tours and food tastings, a procession, and a fundraising event. The tradition is a joyous occasion, when the memory of our ancestors and the continuity of life are celebrated. Festivities run from mid-October through November 2 and are open to the public. "Chrome and Candy Dreams: A Rite of Passage" Curated by Norman Paraiso, Juan "Wicho" Flores, and Ariana Arroyo. Open Reception: Saturday, September 12, 2026 1- 5 p.m. For generations, communities have demonstrated that the most effective responses to violence are often not through criminalization, but in the relationships and cultural practices that help the youth dream of a better future. Lowrider bikes are often the first vehicle through which youth express their individuality, cultural pride, and sense of belonging. Each bike carries with it the legacy of those who built, rode, and shared it, embodying the values that continue to sustain lowrider culture today. This exhibition brings together a display of lowrider bikes, contemporary artists, photographers, and special contributions of archival photo collections from local San Diego bike club chapters. Chrome and "Candy Dreams" honors the living heritage of the lowrider bike as a powerful rite of passage for generations of youth. Atop Banker’s Hill, Mister A’s is welcoming the season with a new dessert menu from Executive Pastry Chef Amy Simpson, whose approach centers on seasonal produce and desserts that bring a playful and nostalgic aspect to her technically polished plates. For the late-summer/early-fall menu, Chef Amy drew from the abundance of stone fruit and pears sourced from farm partners JR Organics and Sage Hill Ranch Gardens. Highlights include: Sweet Corn Sticky Toffee Pudding | toffee sauce, brown butter popcorn ice cream, plums, caramel popcorn Baked Hawaiian | passion fruit, orange, & guava sorbet, coconut macaroon, maple glazed macadamia nuts, toasted swiss meringue Honey Brie Cheesecake | graham crumbles, fresh figs, balsamic roasted candy snap grapes Dark Chocolate Ganache | chocolate sablé, miso cassis caramel, salted caramel ganache, fleur de sel And, don’t overlook the Roasted Strawberry Ice Cream! Simpson works with her farm partners to set aside “jam berries”—very ripe strawberries that aren’t picture-perfect enough for serving but are typically even sweeter as their sugars have developed. She then roasts the jam berries with balsamic vinegar to balance acidity, resulting in an ice cream that tastes like a classic, rich strawberry shake with a little something extra to deepen the flavor profile. Rounding out the menu are additions including Lemon Meringue, Caramelized Pear Napoleon, Tiramisu Pain Perdu, and Dragon Fruit + Coconut Tapioca, all listed on the menu alongside expertly selected wine pairings from Wine Director Scott Rose.

AURA by Magnolias is a free, family-friendly community festival celebrating health, wellness, creativity, entrepreneurship, and connection within San Diego’s Latino community. Taking place on Saturday, October 17, 2026, from 12 to 6 p.m. at Wilson Middle School in City Heights, AURA will bring together women, families, community organizations, small businesses, artists, authors, health providers, and local resources for an afternoon designed to inform, inspire, and connect. Guests can enjoy live music and cultural performances, educational workshops, health and community resources, mobile health services, local vendors and artisans, books and authors, food, activities, and raffles throughout the day. AURA is presented by Magnolias, a San Diego nonprofit organization that supports and connects Spanish-speaking immigrant women through educational programs, wellness activities, community-building, and opportunities for personal and professional growth.
