This exhibit highlights the profound impact of Favela and the Royal Chicano Air Force (R.C.A.F.) on Chicano art and activism. Favela was a trailblazer in the use of calavera imagery to depict Chicano life, addressing issues and perspectives often marginalized in the mainstream. His involvement with the R.C.A.F.—a Sacramento-based Chicano art collective founded in 1969—offered him and his peers a powerful medium of expression through silkscreen posters. For the R.C.A.F., Chicano arte was not created for art’s sake but as a tool of resistance and empowerment, reflecting the cultural pride and activism central to Chicanismo. The R.C.A.F. began as un grupo de estudiantes Chicanos with profe’s and community gente, who came together to form an art collective with the aim of making cultural arts accessible to the working-class raza—La Plebe! “Surf Wagon”- Summer Paint and Sip at Artifex Brewery – Oceanside Tuesday, July 22 | 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. Join us for the very first Paint & Sip Night at Artifex Brewery’s brand new tasting room in Oceanside! With plenty of space, a laid-back patio that flows seamlessly into indoor seating, a massive bar, and quality pizza just steps away, this is the perfect spot to unwind, sip, and get creative. We’ll be painting a Vintage “Surf Wagon”, a nod to Oceanside’s coastal charm and surf culture. This beginner-friendly class is guided step-by-step, and we’ll be working on a 14×14 canvas, giving you all the room you need to bring your beachy masterpiece to life. An ancient and eco-centered craft, Natural Dyes are a place to connect with the beauty and bounty of our planet’s rich offerings while creating with color and using our hands and minds to refresh our homes, wardrobes and to create one-of-a-kind palettes. In this hands-on workshop students will learn the entire process of natural dyeing while incorporating creative design elements through resist dye methods of Shibori. Each student will Shibori and hand-dye three natural fiber silk &/or bamboo scarves or squares to take home or gift to loved ones. If you’ve ever looked into using Natural Dyes, you may have been intimidated by the many facets of the process. We’ll cover them all–scour, mordant, preparation of natural dye, basic Shibori dye resist methods, natural dyeing & finishing–in great detail so you can get to creating with natural color today. All materials included. Students will receive an ‘Intro to Natural Dyes’ booklet that covers the entire process in detail, three natural fiber scarves to dye and Shibori, and samples from the dye pots.
