  • Dr. Eric Topol talks about the latest news on COVID-19 and monkeypox. Then, an updated Climate Action Plan was approved by the San Diego City Council Tuesday. Its strategy to get to net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2035 includes plans to retrofit existing buildings, including whole neighborhoods from gas to electric heating and appliances. Also, the San Diego Padres shook up the baseball world Tuesday trading the Washington Nationals for star player Juan Soto and others. Later, San Diego County officials say we’re in the midst of a mental health crisis. How are the millions of dollars in additional funding in this year’s budget being spent to address the crisis? Plus, the redevelopment of a housing project in Los Angeles is supposed to show the potential of public housing if done right. Finally, we take a virtual ride on a pirate ship that was built in San Diego but now sails around Big Bear Lake.
  • Around the world, democracy is being challenged as never before. Many Western democracies, including the United States, face significant democratic backlash at home. Countries such as Russia and China, whose institutions developed outside the post-war democratic consensus, are becoming increasingly powerful. Authoritarian states are proliferating. And new technologies are fueling the spread of disinformation and empowering autocrats and extremists. Join IGCC’s Future of Democracy initiative on Feb. 16, 2023 at 5:30 p.m. PST for a keynote address from the Honorable M. Margaret McKeown, a United States Circuit Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. McKeown, who has lectured and taught extensively on intellectual property, international law, human rights law, litigation, ethics, judicial administration, and constitutional law in Latin America, Asia, the Middle East, and Europe, will reflect on the future of democracy and the rule of law. This event is sponsored by the UC Institute on Global Conflict and Cooperation (IGCC) and UC San Diego’s School of Global Policy and Strategy.

  • No experience necessary. Ages 16+ welcome! In this workshop with Molly Prentzel you will design and sew your own quilt blocks and attach them to a pre-loved item of your choosing (we recommend you bring a tote bag or jacket). You’ll leave with a one-of-a-kind item you’ll be proud to use or wear. Intuitive quilting is the process of creating a quilt (or quilt block) using your intuition and sense of creativity. We’ll be selecting fabric scraps in shapes and colors that we’re drawn to without too much planning. We’ll move through the process without limits, allowing for creativity to flow freely. This course is for beginners and seasoned quilters alike. If you’ve never used a sewing machine before, you’ll be guided on how to sew simple straight lines, gentle curves and how to appliqué. If you’ve sewn apparel or quilts using patterns before, you’ll be encouraged to put away the “rules” and sometimes rigid guidelines of traditional quilting to tap into a more freeform and intuitive way of quilting.
