Mainly Mozart – the San Diego nonprofit behind the highly acclaimed Mainly Mozart All-Star Orchestra Festival – is honored to announce Erica Ollmann Saphire, Ph.D., MBA, Professor, President and CEO of La Jolla Institute for Immunology, is the 2025 San Diego Genius Award honoree. Dr. Sapphire will be recognized Oct. 18 at the Genius Awards Dinner at the Westgate Hotel. Tickets are available now at mainlymozart.org/genius. Since 2015, the Genius Award has celebrated extraordinary individuals whose contributions span science, technology, and the arts, enrich the community, and embody “Genius in the Spirit of Mozart.” Saphire joins past recipients Dr. Irwin Jacobs (2015), Dr. Andrew Viterbi (2016), Dr. Walter Munk (2017), Dr. Elizabeth Blackburn (2018), Chancellor Pradeep Khosla (2019), Susan Tousi (2022), Dr. David Brenner (2023), and Dr. Al Pisano (2024). This year’s Genius Award Selection Committee members included Martha Dennis (chair), Steve Hart (chair), Irwin Jacobs, Joel Buxbaum, and David Brenner. Dr. Saphire’s pioneering research at La Jolla Institute for Immunology has unraveled the molecular mechanisms by which viruses such as Ebola, Marburg, Lassa, and SARS-CoV-2 infect human cells and evade immune defenses. Under her leadership, teams have solved the high-resolution structures of multiple viral glycoproteins, guided global vaccine design efforts, and spearheaded the collaborative consortia—including the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation–supported CoVIC initiative and the NIAID Viral Hemorrhagic Fever Immunotherapeutic Consortium—that united scientists across five continents in life-saving immunotherapeutic research, closing the critical gap between scientific breakthroughs and real-world medical interventions. Recognizing another crucial research gap, Dr. Saphire recently launched a groundbreaking institute-wide initiative focused on uncovering sex-based differences in the immune system. Dr. Saphire’s work has been recognized at the White House with the Presidential Early Career Award in Science and Engineering, with young investigator awards from the International Congress of Antiviral Research, the American Society for Microbiology, the MRC Centre for Virus Research in the United Kingdom, and the California Life Sciences Pantheon Award for Academia and Marion Spencer Fay Award. She has been awarded a Fulbright Global Scholar fellowship from the United States Department of State and a Mercator Fellowship from the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, to develop international collaborations using cryoelectron microscopy to further global health. Join Judy Reeves and Robb Donaldson for a New Year’s Eve celebration of fun and literary games as we write our way into 2026. We’ll delve into New Year’s traditions and legends (maybe create some of our own), write to prompts, and generally have a good time. Together we’ll count down the minutes til midnight and welcome the New Year with toasts and cheers. There will be treats, and you’re welcome to bring goodies (and libations) to share. Judy is a writer and teacher whose books include A Writer’s Book of Days, named “Best Nonfiction” by the San Diego Book Awards; Writing Alone, Writing Together; A Creative Writer’s Kit; The Writer’s Retreat Kit and, most recently, Wild Women, Wild Voices. Her fiction, nonfiction, and poetry has appeared in the San Diego Reader; The Frozen Moment; A Year in Ink; Connotations Press; Serving House Journal; Waymark; Expressive Writing, Classroom and Community, and other journals and anthologies. Two plays, written with a women’s writing ensemble, were produced by the Fritz Theater. She’s also served as editor for several journals and chapbooks, including three editions of A Year in Ink. She has been leading community-based writing practice groups for thirty years and teaches at writing conferences internationally and at San Diego Writers, Ink, a nonprofit literary center she cofounded. Robert is a licensed psychotherapist and writer from San Diego, California with certificates in Memoir Writing from both Pacifica Graduate Institute and San Diego Writers, Ink, and a certificate in Fiction Writing from Gotham Writers Workshop. He had a short memoir performed in the 2022 San Diego Memoir Showcase, and has had memoirs published in the Shaking the Tree Anthology Volume 5 and Volume 6, as well as Writing Down the Soul 2022 (Pacifica Graduate Institute), and a short story in Flash Fiction Magazine. Robert experiences creative writing as a potent healing tool because the tales of our past, moments both extraordinary and mundane, are deeply meaningful and always worth written celebration as either fiction or memoir. We invite community members and affiliated organizations alike to the unveiling of “Portraits in Caregiving”, a series of photographs honoring the caregiving experience. This exhibit captures the essence of family and unconditional love through intimate and tender moments found in the routine of caregiving. Guests will have the opportunity to speak to the photographers as well as the featured caregivers. SCRC’s staff will also be present to give you a tour of our office space, share information about our vital support services for caregivers, and discuss professional networking and corporate partnership opportunities. "M(other) Tongue" brings together artists who use textile to examine the interconnected experiences of migration, displacement, and cultural inheritance. Drawing on textile traditions rooted in women’s domestic and communal practices, the works approach stitching, weaving, and dyeing as forms of mark making; methods of carrying ancestral stories across borders and generations. In "M(other) Tongue," cloth becomes both archive and language, expressing the tensions of uprooting and the desire to remain connected to one’s past. Each piece invites viewers to reflect on how identity is continually woven from personal narratives, shared histories, and the ongoing work of becoming.
