  • Explore clay surface design techniques — Sgraffito & Stencils! Tuesdays, June 10, 17, 24, July 1 & 15, From 6 p.m. - 8:30 p.m., with the last class of the series from 6 p.m. - 9 p.m. In this 5-week series, students will learn the basics of handbuilding to create functional pieces with an emphasis on decorative techniques. Working with mid fire clay, we will explore various methods of building forms and decorative techniques with underglazes and slips. Students will complete multiple projects throughout the course while applying handmade stencils and layering techniques with colorful patterns as well textured colorful designs using the sgraffito technique. Students will be able to utilize a wide array of glazes and colors through the course. All materials provided.   • Enjoy Irish Sports all day on May 24 at Southwestern College. Join us for more than 70 Gaelic Football, Camogie, and Hurling games played by dozens of teams across the USA and Canada in a one day tournament open to the public. Free admission and parking. Also, enjoy Irish music, performances by Clan Rince School of Irish Dance and a beer garden for 21 and over. The West Coast Sevens is the second largest Gaelic sports tournament in the US. Local San Diego teams competing include Setanta Gaelic Football and Social Club, Na Fianna Ladies Football and Camogie Club. St. Peter's Hurling Club, and San Diego Rovers Hurling Club. Hurling has been played for more than 3,000 years, and is considered the fastest game on grass using a wooden stick called a hurley and a small leather ball called a sliotar. Gaelic Football has been played since the middle ages, and is a very fast form of soccer where players advance the football, a spherical leather ball, up the field with a combination of carrying, bouncing, kicking, hand-passing, and soloing (dropping the ball and then toe-kicking the ball upward into the hands). Scoring in Hurling, Camogie, and Gaelic Football is by hitting or kicking the ball over the crossbar for one point, or under the crossbar and into the net for three points. In this crochet workshop, students will learn the fundamental skills of crochet, including starting a project, basic stitches like single crochet (sc), half double crochet (hdc), double crochet (dc), chain (ch) magic circle, and tying off. This three-week course will allow students to learn and practice the basics in-studio, practice at home, and then return with their questions and learn more. No experience necessary. Students are welcome to bring their own yarn and/or hook, but it is not necessary. We will be using size 4 yarn and between 4.00mm and 6.00mm crochet hooks. You don’t have to bring your own supplies but you are welcome to. All materials included.
