Located above the Flower Fields, ArtWalk Carlsbad is back for its 6th year, bringing fine art, live music, and interactive art experiences, offered free to attendees. In a venue overlooking the ocean, guests can explore different facets of art, while enjoying beautiful coastal views. The weekend-long festival focuses on fine art for sale by local artists, as well as those who travel from all over the U.S. and Mexico to show and sell their work. The event will display every medium of art, including painting, sculpture, glass work, fine jewelry, photography and more. More than 150 fine artists’ work will be featured, along with interactive art for families at KidsWalk, a full palette of musical performers, food trucks and stands, and more. The event will be fenced, even though admission is free; the fence allows attendees to enjoy beer and wine (to those 21-years and over), while strolling around the event, rather than having to remain in a Beer Garden. New this year, there will be a pavilion, sponsored by Wilsey Asset Management, to offer shade for the warm early fall weekend. It will be located in the middle of the event, adjacent to the Beer Garden and midway music stage, providing some additional seating. The Escondido Public Art Commission and Escondido City Council – together with the Escondido Downtown Business Association and Visit Escondido – announce April as ‘Arts, Culture and Creativity Month’ (ACCM) in Escondido. Throughout the month (of April), Escondido will host a variety of free events and resources in celebration of arts, culture, and creativity. The Public Art Commission is excited to fund nine projects that celebrate Arts, Culture, and Creativity Month this spring. All events are free to the public. The following are the recipients and the funded projects: - ArtHatch will host a month-long April Arts Showcase beginning April 12 - ESCO Alley Art & Downtown Business Association will complete a Community Unity School Initiative project at John Paul the Great University - CoLabCrafts will host weekly Escondido Makes Art workshops tailored to various ages and skill levels. - Escondido Arts Association will hold the Mayor's Art Contest and Exhibition, April 9 – May 2 A gallery reception will take place April 12 from 4 p.m. – 6 p.m. - Escondido Choral Arts Foundation and California Center for the Arts, Escondido will host a First Wednesday at The Center Concert. The musical festival showcase will be on April 2 from 6:30 p.m. - 8 p.m. - Glass House Arts and California Center for the Arts will display a temporary sculpture installation * (pronounced star). In December 1846, the largest battle of the US-Mexico War in California occurred about 30 miles north of Old Town, in the San Pasqual Valley near today’s San Diego Zoo Safari Park. American and Mexican forces struggled for control of Alta California and the battle paved the way to the eventual Mexican surrender near Los Angeles, a month later. As part of the broader war from 1846 to 1848, the action near San Diego secured control of Upper California for the United States and ensured its inclusion as part of the land ceded to the United States by Mexico in 1848 under the terms of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. 175 years ago, in 1850, California became the 31st state. David Miller received his PhD from the University of California, San Diego in 2007. His research focus is the social and cultural history of the nineteenth-century United States. David has been with USD since 2005, offering a range of upper and lower-division courses including The Civil War and Reconstruction, The Civil War and Reconstruction in Popular Culture, US Immigration History, California History, A History of Race and San Diego, US History to 1877, and Race and Ethnicity in the American Experience. Miller received the 2017 Faculty Award for Exceptional Teaching, the 2019 Center for Educational Excellence "Best Attendance" award, and in 2020 the Center for Catholic Thought and Culture travel grant to explore the history of immigration in San Francisco and New York City from a Catholic perspective. He is the History Department's internship program coordinator.
